Mysticnitekatt:

In 1968, WSBK-38 broadcast the Boston Bruins (whose popularity was rapidly growing, given that they were led by a young superstar named Bobby Orr), while WKBG-56 carried the Boston Celtics (who were defending NBA champions and had recently won eight straight NBA championships).

Although the Celtics had won the 1968 NBA title, they weren't as popular as the Bruins at the time.

Regarding syndicated programming, I would think that WKBG had the slight edge then. Later on, WSBK had, in my opinion, the stronger off-network lineup.

A couple of oddities about WJZB... The transmitter was apparently not designed for color, but it passed through, sort of. I remember on our Magnavox set - an odd smeared, shifted-to-the-right color image that overlayed the B&W image.

The transmitter was powered on and off at erratic times - either someone doing by remote control when they remembered, or a very bad timer... All the time it was on - it relayed WWLP (maybe over-the-air pickup?). It would be on by 5:50 PM or so - and would not go off until 7:35 or much later sometimes - therefore carrying the beginning of whatever NBC show began at 7:30. (Before the networks were cut back to 8 PM start.) At least once it stayed on the whole evening.

Thanks for the info! Other than the 90 minutes per night broadcasting (to cover the minimum requirements of the license) and the lack of a color transmitter I don't know much about them. A friend of mine who grew up in Worcester does remember watching channel 14 when they were a full service station earlier in the decade. He said the picture was always fuzzy (but that may have been the UHF tuners at the time).

Found out who they are - it's Bob Norman, Gale Carroll and Dick Galiette. (I found an old TV Guide ad on Ebay with the info.) Just want to get it right and maybe jog some memories.
