At the time Welk was on twice weekly, with his familiar
Saturday-night show and a talent show, "Top Tunes And
New Talent," on Mondays. The latter was a misguided
effort to attract a younger audience to Welk; most of
the talent was in the 20-30-year-old range. But the show
lasted three years (1956-59). At least two Welk regulars,
Joe Feeney and Jack Imel, were contestants on the show.

Perhaps not so coincidentally, around this same time ABC
considered giving Ted Mack, himself a former bandleader,
a show similar to Welk's Saturday-night hour. The idea
was given a tryout in "Amateur Hour"'s slot one Sunday
night in January 1957; unfortunately it was the same night
Elvis made his third and final appearance on "The Ed Sullivan
Show" (at the time, Mack and Sullivan were on against each
other), the one where he was photographed from the waist up.
Although critics thought Mack's show was better than Welk's,
apparently ABC wasn't happy with the ratings and the show
never materialized; in fact, "Amateur Hour" moved to NBC in
the summer of 1957 and wasn't seen on ABC again until a
six-month period (March-September) in 1960, after which it
ran for ten years on Sunday afternoons on CBS.

It's worth noting Cas Walker hosted both shows twelve hours apart. Cas Walker was a local businessman and politician. He promoted his supermarket with these programs. Walker also featured entertainment and was a launching pad for artist like Dolly Parton and the Everly Brothers.
