Re: Retro: Nashville,TN/Bowling Green,KY--January 10,1966 Source-TV Guide,Nashville Edition

A question and a comment:

1) When did Channel 13 affiliate with ABC?

2) When I was a kid, the listings for the Nashville network affiliates were included in the Northern Alabama edition of TV Guide. I was fascinated that Ch. 8 carried several of the CBS daytime shows that Ch. 5 did not (mainly the 9:00-10:30 sitcom block). When did Ch. 5 start pre-empting these shows? I first started looking at TV Guide around '68, and Ch. 5 wasn't carrying those shows.

V. Carter takes us back to Nashville and Bowling Green (Kentucky) on January 10th, 1966:

Western Kentucky is located in Bowling Green, but it's interesting that (I presume) this away game was not shown live.

Perhaps the reason for the delayed broadcast was that there was no landline (coaxial cable/microwave) connection between Eastern Tennessee's Johnson City (Tennessee) campus and the station's studios, and that the tape of the game had to be physically transported back to the station (maybe by private plane?) after the game for broadcast.

Perhaps the then-WLTV-13 also broadcast several Western Kentucky basketball games live (home games, plus some away games where there were direct connections to coaxial or microwave networks between the game venue and the station).

To answer your question concerning #1--
WLTV, Channel 13 first went on the air as an independent station
on June 3,1962. it was independent for at least 5 years (1962-67)
before becoming an ABC afilliate in 1967. as an indie, it carried
a lot of 'homegrown' local programming as indicated by the listings.
there were also movies and a few syndicated shows like 'Lone Ranger'
that were shown. WLTV was sold around 1971 and the new calls
became WBKO, still an ABC station today on channel 13.

in 1969 and Ch. 5 was carrying Mike Douglas at 9 AM. I do know
that by the fall of 1972 Ch. 5 was picking up CBS; they had the
block of Joker's Wild/Price Is Right/Gambit from 9-10:30.

Incidentally, where no listing is given for Ch. 5 Monday at 8 PM
in 1966, I know that Andy Griffith aired at that time, and I have
to believe he was on Ch. 5 at that time.
