Some observations - Channel 2 was still running off network sitcoms in mornings at this point. Both these shows, including Leave It To Beaver no longer air over the air in New York once Channel 2 dumps them. Beaver would show up on Fox 5 WNEW TV/WNYW in 1986. Beaver did not test well in syndication in the 70's. It was when WTCG 17 ATlanta was launched on satellite that the demand for this show would come back in the 80's. Sunday morning cartoons ran on less than half the CBS affiliates. CBS was still running only movies late night and eventually would mix in drama reruns in the coming years. Channel 2 was on the air 24/7 with a test pattern about an hour a day.

Also Labor Day had no special programming on CBS or Channel 2. Sunday prime time was still starting at 8 PM. Soon it would begin at 7 PM. Also, Tuesday Prime Time programming began at 7:30 instead of 8 PM which also would soon change.

Channel 4 WNBC TV had no special Labor Day programming. They somehow squeezed a feature film into 90 minutes and these movies seemed fairly recent by 1972 standards. Sunday prime time was still starting at 7:30 PM. Soon it would begin at 7 PM. Also, Tuesday Prime Time programming began at 7:30 instead of 8 PM which also would soon change. NBC was the only network to stay out of Sunday Morning Cartoons as well.

WABC TV was clearly the also ran among network affiliates but was beginning to grow more. Plus ABC still had no morning shows. Most affiliates ran cartoons while WABC TV ran public affairs shows (AM New York would evolve to more entertainment based programming later in the decade and Regis eventually landed there and it evolved into the Live Show in the loate 80's. WABC would soon move the Brady Bunch to 11 AM and Love American Style to 4 PM in the Fall. WABC TV had some good movies back then.

Was "Paul Bernard" the Canadian semi-soap "Paul Bernard,
Psychiatrist"? On that show Dr. Paul Bernard, played by
Canadian actor Chris Wiggins, would interview patients
(also played by a rotating group of actors) about their problems in his office.
The show lasted only a year in Canada (1971-72) but some
CBS stations in the U.S. carried it, and WCBS must have been
one of them. BTW, Gale Garnett, who had a big folk hit in the U.S. in
1964, "We'll Sing In The Sunshine," played one of Dr. Bernard's patients.

There may be some confusion about the Bob Newhart/"Arnie" listing as well.
"The Bob Newhart Show" debuted on Sept. 16, 1972, replacing "Arnie," who,
BTW, was played by Herschel Bernardi, at the time also the voice of Charley
the Tuna.

Would this have been the premiere week for CBS's return to game shows in the morning with The Joker's Wild, The Price is Right, and Gambit?

Speaking of which, Herschel Bernardi's character name on Arnie was "Arnie Nuvo,"
not "Arnie Hershall."

Of course, ABC's Olympic coverage would be thrown a curveball with the massacre of 11 Jewish athletes. Everyone watched as Jim McKay said "They're All Gone" on September 4th.(September 5th. in Munich). So much for the "Serene Olympics." Next morning, they carried the Memorial Service on a tape delay at 7 a.m. New York Time(it had already occurred at 4 a.m. New York Time.

Brady Bunch and Love American Style were MOST CERTAINLY from ABC and not SYndicated. ABC ran The Brady Bunch beginning in 1971 on weekdays as part of their daytime lineup. They planned new episodes until at least 1975 but they in a last minute decision canceled the series in April of 1974. The Network had another year to run Bradys and did so in reruns furing the day resting the show for a couple short periods. It was in September of 1975 that the Brady Bunch hit syndication.

In New York WNEW CHannel 5 got it and ran it weekdays at 5 PM and Saturdays at 830 AM (At that time they began a Saturday Morning kids block competing against the networks and WOR TV which they never did prior to 1975. WPIX stayed out of cartoons Saturday Morning until they went 24 hours in June of 1980. They they ran them 6 to 9 AM and religion 9 to noon). Channel 5 would run the Brady Bunch before the Flintstones which they ran at 530. In the Fall of 1976 Channel 5 moved the Brady Bunch to 6 PM and also began a double run running it mornings as well. From 1976 to 1981 Channel 5 ran 2 episodes a day at most points. From 1981 to 1982 they single ran it again. The Brady Bunch fell off Channel 5 in September of 1982. The station bought the program in December of 1984 and single and double ran it at varios points. After Fox bought the station, 2 years later in 1988 Fox 5 finally let the Brady Bunch expire once and for all. WPIX would pick it up in 1989 on a Barter Basis and ran it till 1998 weekdays at most points.

I actually do not know when Love American Style ended its Network run. I know Channel 5 had this several years on late nights and sometimes in Middays. But Love American Style was also a Network rerun at this point as well.

Channel 2 began running Family Affair a week later. My 3 Sons ran during the summer in reruns on CBS. They would replace My Three Sons with Family Affair a week later. So Channel 2 preempted nothing.

- WCBS's airing of War of the Worlds on Saturday at 2:30 P.M. was under the very short-lived Saturday Shocker banner, their attempt to compete with such programs as WPIX's Chiller Theatre, WNEW's Creature Features and WOR's Tales of Terror and other sundry horror movie shows.
- The 1:15 A.M. M-F WNBC movie skein was The Great Great Show.
- There was no NewsCenter4 until 1974. Until then it was The Sixth Hour and The Eleventh Hour on weeknights, plus other pertinent names for their weekend newscasts.
- On Saturday night, Istanbul Express was aired under the Saturday Film Festival banner, while Play It Cool was run on The Great Great Show; after that movie but before sign-off, was the sermonette.
- The late-night movie on WABC in those days was called The One O'Clock Movie.
- WABC wasn't exactly an also-ran in at least one respect: their Eyewitness News, which often battled WCBS-TV's newscasts for the top spot at 6 P.M. (while WNBC's Sixth Hour truly was an also-ran - and then some) In addition, The 4:30 Movie, while running behind Mike Douglas on WCBS ratings-wise, all but creamed WNBC's Movie 4.

Good knowledge. Thanks!

I think someone's confused. In September 1972 ABC was still airing "Bewitched" reruns at 11:30 AM and "Love, American Style" reruns at 4 PM. "Brady Bunch" reruns didn't begin airing on ABC at 11:30 until the summer of 1973; "Love, American Style" was rerun until the spring of 1974, when ABC picked up "Pyramid," which CBS had dropped.

Didn't ABC run "That Girl" in the 11:30 AM slot for two years (1969-1971)? I know that "Love, American Style" originally was on earlier in the afternoon in '71 (1:00 PM) until "Split Second" (with Tom Kennedy) premiered in '71. But eventually, "Love, American Style" went to 4:00 PM when "Password" moved from 4:00 PM until 12:30 PM. (BTW: "Password" replaced "Dark Shadows" in April, 1971 at 4:00 PM.).

Actually, "Split Second" debuted on March 25, 1972 at 12:30PM ET, replacing Password in its time slot, which moved to 1PM ET. Password only lasted a few months at 4PM, when in September 1971, it was relocated to 12:30PM.

"Split Second" debuted March 20, 1972; I have the ABC promo ad
from the Central Florida edition of TV Guide for that week. "Password"
moved to noon; "All My Children" aired at 1 PM, breaking ABC's games
into two blocks: "Password"/"Split Second" (12-1) and "Let's Make A
Deal"/"Newlywed Game"/"Dating Game" (1:30-3). The ABC daytime
schedule, which lasted from March 1972 to July 1973, was (all times
Eastern):

11:30 Bewitched
12 N Password
12:30 Split Second
1 PM All My Children
1:30 Let's Make A Deal
2 PM Newlywed Game
2:30 Dating Game
3 PM General Hospital
3:30 One Life To Live
4 PM Love, American Style

"Brady Bunch" reruns replaced "Bewitched," and a reality, reminiscent-of-
"Queen For A Day" thing, "The Girl In My Life," replaced "The Dating Game"
in July 1973.

Actually the paper I got the listings from made a typo. It said Brady Kids at 11 AM Tuesday and the rest of the week said Bewitched. So it was Bewitched. Brady Kids ran Saturday only and Brady Bunch would move to daytime a year down the road. I thought bewitched would be syndicated in teh fall of 72 but that was the fall of 73 as well.
