This also from New Jersey Herald - September 3, 1972 edition as well as the September 10 1972 edition for SUnday. - The Network stations had little special programming on Labor Day except for ABC but that was mostly Olympics coverage which they would have had anyway. But the independent stations had quite a bit of special programming. Channel 5 had the Labor Day Telethon the entire day. Channels 9 and 11 had quite a bit of sports programming that day. WOR TV was in transition from a traditional independent focusing on broad based entertainment to a station focusing more on old movies, sports, game shows, and drama shows. cartoons were about to fall off WOR TV one by one and sitcoms soon followed. WOR TV at this point sought to counter program against WNEW TV and WPIX and did so successfully.

His logic were the Davey Kids would keep WPIX on and sit through his show waiting for the 8 AM Cartoons. I simply did not start watching till 8 - would watch Channel 2 in the 7 AM hour. WOuld watch Davey already Saturdays on WABC so I did not feel like seeing him 2 days in a row.)

Channel 5 offered fewer movies than the rest and they tended to be older ones. Part of the reason was first run shows were on in prime time like Merv and News. Merv in Prime Time was a Metromedia thing. Most Metromedia Stations ran fewer movies than most independents. Metromedia tended to rely heavily on sitcoms for their stations. Channel 5 was the leading independent with WPIX somewhat behind and WOR TV was the also ran.

7:15 DAVEY & GOLIATH-Children (nice transition to kids shows - Eventually Oral Roberts would occupy 730 after Davey and then cartoons at 8 - ODD - should have run Oral Roberts before Davey not after - theory - Oral wanted the 730 time slot right before the cartoons to catch kids waiting for the cartoons.
