RETRO: NYC Metro - Saturday, May 31, 1969 (Part 2: UHF's and Connecticut TV)

[SOURCES: TV Guide, New York-Metropolitan Edition, May 31-June 6, 1969; also, day's listings in The New York Times, Daily News, New York Post, The Morning Record and Journal (Meriden, CT) and Red Bank (NJ) Daily Register (May 29, 1969 issue); show episode info, where applicable, courtesy IMDb and TV.com]

NOTE: This particular issue of TV Guide debuted a new look for the TV listings section which emphasized Helvetica with Medium, and designated color shows with a (C) symbol which was the same shape as the channel designations; this replaced the listings layout which (except for some alterations over the years) was basically in effect since 1956; the new layout, with numerous modifications big and small, will remain in place through 1985.

Am I to assume channel 30 (NBC) of New Britain/Hartford wasn't included in this edition yet? I know their signal wasn't increased until the late 1970s.

It wasn't until fall 1979 that Channel 30's listings were added onto TVG's New York Metro edition, which would have dovetailed with: a) their aforesaid increase in signal, and b) their change in ownership, and in call letters to WVIT (as of 1969, they were still WHNB-TV).

And at this point, the New York Metro TVG only carried the network listings for Channel 20; the other, non-NBC programs came from the Meriden, CT Morning Record and Journal.

Thank you for the update! I always found it odd that, in the last days of program listings, WCTX-TV channel 59 of New Haven was never listed in that edition. It would've made sense, since their analog signal was 5 million watts and most of Fairfield County (which received the New York Metropolitan Edition) could get them over-the-air.

By the way, was Connecticut Public Television, later known as CPTV, ever mentioned in those listings? I would think that channel 49 of Bridgeport was on the air by then.

To my knowledge, it wasn't until 1973 that WEDW listings first appeared in TVG's NY Metro edition. The Journal and Record had listings for Channel 24.

Which at this point was no big loss, as all non-NBC programming on this day was "Film".

Seems it was awhile before Channel 20 aired My Little Margie reruns (the only other thing in their library besides their unknown "Films").

WATR reminds me a lot of WAIM/40 in Anderson SC. Both channels were "extra" network affiliates in large markets. Both relied a lot on "film" for their local programing, though WAIM featured the mysterious "Compass," and "Panorama" as well. Both channels eventually went indie and broadcast to their entire markets. 20 ended up with CW, while 40 is now MY.

Meanwhile, in Sarasota, another channel 40 - the former WXLT and current WWSB - is still an ABC affiliate.
