This schedule post chronicles the week during which KAUT debuted its free-to-air programming schedule, offering a rolling afternoon news block (branded as TV-43 Newswatch) and a limited two-hour schedule of syndicated shows on weekdays. (This was also the week Ronald Reagan was elected as the 40th President of the United States.) KAUT had actually begun operation as Oklahoma City's third commercial UHF station – chronologically, the sixth such station, counting defunct outlets KTVQ (channel 25, allocation later occupied by eventual KOCB sister station KOKH-TV) and KLPR-TV (channel 19, allocation later occupied by KUOT-CD) – on October 15, 1980, originally operating for its first three weeks exclusively as a charter affiliate of Video Entertainment Unlimited (VEU), an over-the-air subscription television service – in the vein of services such as ONTV, SelecTV and Spectrum – offering uncut movies (both mainstream theatricals and pornographic films), specials and sports, which required a special decoder box in order to un-encrypt the signal.
Note: The Oklahoman did not include the VEU schedule until April 1982 (six months before VEU ceased being offered by KAUT, at which point, its time periods were replaced with syndicated entertainment shows), when Television News incorporated listings for cable channels into the supplement. (Oddly, the supplement listed VEU in a separate grid from KAUT's FTA schedule for three months after the change, before folding the two into the same grid space as additional cable channels were added to the magazine.) As such, time periods during which VEU programming aired are listed under the generic nameplate "VEU programming". (I cannot verify whether the [pre-1981] Oklahoma State and [from 1981 onward] Oklahoma City editions of TV Guide ever listed VEU within the KAUT listings or as a separate service as how Television News did as mentioned above. If anyone can verify whether TV Guide included listings for VEU, send a reply confirming it.)
