Retro: Oklahoma City - Week of October 15, 1989

This post looks at the week of October 15-21, 1989, the week in which I was born (my birthdate was Friday, the 20th). This week saw two major events cross paths: the first was the 1989 World Series – which began on Saturday, October 14 – which saw a crosstown matchup between the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics, and was known as either the "Bay Bridge Series," the "BART Series" or the "Battle of the Bay" (it was the first World Series involving crosstown teams to have occurred since 1956). The second was the Loma Prieta earthquake, the 6.9-magnitude temblor which struck at 5:04 p.m. (Pacific Time) on October 17 (35 minutes prior to the start of Game 3 of the series, which was televised nationally by ABC). The quake – which turned out to be the first major earthquake that struck within the U.S. ever to have been broadcast on live television – caused severe damage throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and affected the game's Candlestick Park venue, knocking out power to the stadium and damaging its upper deck. As such, for the safety of spectators, Game 3 was postponed until October 27 and the deciding Game 4 (which was originally scheduled to be played on October 18) was delayed accordingly until October 28. (The As would rout the Giants to win the championship, four games to zero.)

DISCLAIMER: Because of the distruptions to the World Series schedule caused by the Loma Prieta earthquake, prime time programming changes made by ABC due to the postponement of Games 3 and 4 will be noted in the October 17 and 18 schedules for KOCO-TV within this thread. Also, from this post onward, program schedules for the major national and regional superstations available in the Oklahoma City market at the time of the individual schedule periods will be listed separately from those for the local broadcast stations.

† As a consequence of the Loma Prieta earthquake, ABC aired repeat episodes of Roseanne and The Wonder Years amid the initial uncertainty as to whether Game 3 of the 1989 World Series would take place as scheduled; an extended ABC News Special Report – anchored by Ted Koppel from the news division's Washington, D.C. bureau, with Al Michaels (who served as a color commentator for ABC's World Series coverage that year) acting as a de facto reporter – on the earthquake's immediate aftermath followed those two programs.

† Prior to the Loma Prieta earthquake that resulted in the remaining games in the series being delayed, ABC had originally scheduled the film to air as a contingency in case the 1989 World Series ended before Game 5. KOCO also had originally scheduled the 5 Alive Sports World Series Pre-Game Show to lead into the game; had Game 6 been held on this date, KOCO would have preempted that night's scheduled syndicated M*A*S*H rerun.

† Prior to the Loma Prieta earthquake that resulted in the remaining games in the series being delayed, ABC had originally scheduled these programs to air as a contingency in case the 1989 World Series ended before Game 6. KOCO also had originally scheduled the 5 Alive Sports World Series Pre-Game Show to lead into the game; had Game 6 been held on this date, KOCO would have preempted that night's scheduled syndicated M*A*S*H rerun.

BTW, if anyone can research what programs ABC aired in place of the earthquake-postponed World Series Game 4 on the evening of October 18, post below. As I noted, the Oklahoman wasn't able to receive notice of schedule changes made by ABC before press time; I'm also not sure whether other newspapers around Oklahoma or elsewhere around the U.S. were able to post programming substitutions that ABC made for that night before their October 18 editions went to press.
