Retro: Oklahoma City - Week of October 28, 1979

This schedule post chronicles the week during which KGMC (channel 34, now KOCB) signed on as the second UHF station – chronologically, the fifth such station, counting defunct outlets KTVQ (channel 25, allocation later occupied by eventual KOCB sister station KOKH-TV) and KLPR-TV (channel 19, allocation later occupied by KUOT-CD) – in the Oklahoma City market. KGMC signed on as a commercial independent station on October 28, 1979, under a joint venture between Rockford, Illinois-based General Media Corporation and Oklahoma City Broadcasting, Inc. (founded by Ted F. Baze, who previously served as station manager at WPHL-TV in Philadelphia); Baze's group would eventually acquire full ownership in January 1990 following bankruptcy proceedings, after acquiring a stake owned by infamous stock speculator Ivan Boesky (whose Beverly Hills Hotel Corp. bought majority interest in KGMC in 1983). Baze sold the station to Superior Broadcasting (co-founded by eventual Nexstar Media Group founder/CEO Perry Sook, who also served as KOCB's general manager under its ownership) in 1993, which sold it in turn to Sinclair Broadcast Group in 1996.

The launch week of KAUT – which began operation as Oklahoma City's third independent station in October 1980, will be chronicled my the next schedule post. However, since KAUT only carried programming from the VEU subscription service for its first two weeks on the air, that post will chronicle the week KAUT commenced its free-to-air news and entertainment schedule, November 2-8, 1980. (Television News did not list VEU programming until cable listings were added to the supplement in April 1982, six months before KAUT ceased carrying the service and adopted a full-time free-to-air schedule; I cannot verify whether the [pre-1981] Oklahoma and [from 1981 onward] Oklahoma City editions of TV Guide ever listed VEU within the KAUT listings or as a separate service like Television News did for the first couple months it included that service's listings. If anyone can verify whether TV Guide included listings for VEU, reply here.)
