Retro: Oklahoma City - Week of September 30, 1979

This schedule post chronicles the week during which KOKH-TV converted from an educational independent into a commercial independent station. The station – which was founded by Oklahoma City Public Schools on February 2, 1959, following Republic Television and Radio Company's donation of the construction permit belonging to the previous occupant of UHF channel 25, KTVQ (which operated from November 1, 1953 until it was forced off the air by court order during bankruptcy proceedings on December 15, 1955) – was sold by the school district on December 14, 1978 to New York City-based John Blair & Co. for $3.5 million. KOKH's conversion made it into the first commercial independent station in Oklahoma, soon to be followed by the launch of KGMC (now KOCB, channel 34) four weeks later on October 28. (KGMC's launch week will be chronicled my the next schedule post.)

Hey tmanokc,

Can you make a post

"Retro: Oklahoma City Week of October 28, 1979"

the week that KGMC (now KOCB) Ch. 34 signed-on?

I mentioned in the intro the week in which KGMC/KOCB signed on will be chronicled in my next post. The week KAUT debuted its free-to-air programming (the week of November 2, 1980) will come after that post. (KAUT technically debuted on October 15, 1980; however, for its first three weeks of operation, it only offered programming from VEU - an OTA subscription service in the vein of ONTV and SelecTV - which was not listed in The Oklahoman until it began incorporating cable listings in its Sunday TV listings magazine insert in April 1982. TV Guide appears to not have listed KAUT's VEU programming in its Oklahoma State edition at any point between October 1980 and September 1982, the period in which KAUT offered VEU programming at night and on weekends.)

I don't know if you have any listing on the Tulsa TV market, but have you ever heard of KOKI's (I believe Fox 22 or 23) Friday night horror movie show called Lucretia's Friday Night Frights. I thought she was very attractive. There is a rare clip on one of those horror host videos that ran on NBC on Bloopers & Practical Jokers in the 80's. The clip was in very good condition. I posted a question like this months ago on the States section of Oklahoma & got no response.
