I little birdie has just informed me that WYAY-FM True Oldies 106.7 will bring the Ultimate Oldies Concert (1989-2002 Fox 97) back to Atlanta in some form in Spring 2009. The reunited Randy and Spiff will host. It is possible that it will be held in the Georgia Dome or Phillips Arena.

It could only be held in the Georgia Dome if every listeners promises to attend and bring 10 other non-listeners. This isn't the heyday of the 90's when they could put a show on in the Georgia Dome. Not only is the audience 15 years older but so are the acts. Who wants to see Connie Francis singing while holding on to her walker? She might be the biggest hitmaker in the history of the universe but she ain't gonna pack the Dome.

If they do one it would be most likely at the Verizon Ampitheater so it is close to their audience and big enough to fit 10,000 geriatric fans. Also most of them would not travel to the inner city to see a show at the Georgia Dome at this point. If they sell out the Georgia Dome I will eat this computer.

Where as I tend to lean to your point of view on this Tibbs. Never under estimate the power of nostalgia.
Went to one of those oldiesapalooza at the dome. Don't remember if it was sold out, or not. But I do remember that
that a good portion of the audience wasn't over the hill. Depending on the acts, and the ticket price it could happen....

The Oldies music is timeless!!!!!!!!! My kids love it!!! That is right!!! NEVER UNDER ESTIMATE THE POWER OF THE OLDIES- and RANDY AND SPIFF!!!!!!!!!!!!! True Oldies 106.7 WYAY is going to kick some serious ass with their 5,000 song playlist!!!!!!!!! Georgia Dome here we come!!!!!!!!!!! I bet that Tommy James AND Connie Francis will be there!

You slay me.

The whole point of rock and roll was to piss off your parents. If your kids listen to the same music that you do; you have been a horrible father.

Lastly, get off the Connie Francis thing. She broke RTibbs heart back in 1962.

While lots of people like oldies, the only twentysomethings that will be at that show will be young guys who want to get hit on by drunk cougars.

Wow cosmic full circle stuff. 106 was orginally an oldies station in Gainesville (competing with the old Fox 97 when it too was a Gainesville station) run by the fantastic late Charlie Giddons.

Actually, that could be a sizeable bunch of people.

If it does happen I hope it's NOT held in the Georgia Dome. The acoustics suck. I'd rather sit in the rain at Turner Field.

The music is timeless, but the musicians aren't. That's why cover bands and tribute bands do so well playing samall and medium sized live venues. But frankly, very few of the artists who were hot stuff in the days when oldies were new were all that good at performing. Connie Francis was a studio singer. She was never all that great in front of an audience.

Remember, when you talk "oldies", you're talking about the performers who lip synced on American Bandstand. You're talking about the one and two hit wonders who played the "Shower of Stars" tours singing their one or two songs. And that was when they were in their prime.

Some of the bands from the late '60's did manage to put together a fairly good nostalgia concert tour. But they were mostly the bands who actually played their own instruments, not the people who dominated the AM Top 40 charts.

If you really want to see oldies performing the oldies, go to Branson, MO.

And that's if the band still has more than one original member! I've seen too many oldies acts where they have one token original member and the rest is a bunch of young guys pulled out of the session pool by the promoter.

That is sad but true.

However there ARE quite a few out there with a lot of their original members out there on the circuit and they sound GOOD!

The Association ("Windy," "Along Comes Mary," etc.)
RARE EARTH and Peter Rivera
Tommy James as a solo act
The Buckinghams ("Kind of a Drag," "Mercy Mercy Mercy")
Alive 'n Kickin' (New York's Premier Wedding Band, with one hit written by TJ, "Tigher and Tighter" anyone?)
KC and the Sunshine Band (ok, newer oldies but still out there)

I bet they can get a good lineup together with the real bands out there!

I was tricked into seeing a concert that included KC and the Sunshine Band once. That'll never happen to be again!

Speaking only for myself, and not as some expert on what the rest of the mass audience might do, I'd turn on PBS to watch a televised show with live performances of all those acts. But I wouldn't buy a ticket to hear them live all together. I'd buy a ticket to an Association concert if it was at a nice venue. Same with a Tommy james concert. But if those two acts were playing, but their time on stage was going to be cut short so that Rare Earth, Alive and Kicking, or the Buckinghams could also perform, then I'd stay home. I wouldn't pay money to see bands I like in concert if I had to also sit through bands I didn't like. That's just me. Maybe other people don't mind paying to sit through stuff they don't like just to get to the good stuff.

I have seen alot of these guys perform and they do a great job. Something was well liked for the Ultimate Oldies Concerts to draw the crowds that they did for so many years.
