Review: Thumbs up to WROR's "Best of Loren & Wally" 25th Anniversary CD

Just finished listening to Loren and Wally's 25th Anniversary CD. It includes alot of very funny comedy bits going all the way back to 1982. Loren and Wally started as a team back on the old WVBF in September 1981.

There is a brief introduction including a mention of 5 former members of the L&A family who have passed on:

-Christian Paul: comedy sidekick from their early years. As I recall, Christian died of heart failure (at a very young age) sometime around 1994. A good portion of the comedy bits on this CD belong to him and date from 1982-1993

-Bill Connell: former Mass. State Trooper and traffic reporter

-Bill Heckbert: I think he was a comedy sidekick but not sure

-Mickey and Salty Brine: Salty was Wally's father and a Providence, RI radio legend who passed away a year ago. Dont know who Mickey was...his mother??

Many of the installments included are bits that L&A run on the air occasionally at listener requests while others I havent heard in quite awhile including:

-Mr Rogers Wins the Lottery (1982)
-Clinton Lie Detector
-Goosey the Clown
-Freakin Ford
-Wally's Tiffany Story (a classic that is frequently requested)
and many others.

There should have been more included.

There are also some pictures throughout the CD pamphlet of various Loren & Wally "casts" (but doesnt list who they are) throughout the WVBF, WCLB, WKLB, and WROR days. After 25 years, I suppose a full list of all those people who worked with them would fill a book. I recall that "Man of 1000 Voices" Joe Alaskey was their comedy sidekick at one point some years ago before leaving for LA. Gay Vernon was once their newsreader. She is currently News Director at Magic 106.7.

But it was good to hear some old familiar names and voices like Nick Nills, Joanie Ciani, Len Nalo, and possibly even Jodi Winchester who was L&A's producer some time back but eventually married Wally.

While I would have liked alot more included, it's still a very funny CD. I orderd mine online via WROR.com. It's also available at all Strawberries, FYE, and Newbury Comics locations according to WROR.com

Thumbs up!

Loren Owens and Wally Brine are two of what may be a vanishing breed in radio: A morning team that does really funny stuff without being overly offensive.

There should be more people in radio like them.

You don't have to be a "shock jock" to get laughs on the radio. Loren and Wally have proven that.

They've managed to survive on the same frequency (105.7) for 25 years, three different owners (Fairbanks Communications, Evergreen--if only briefly--and most recently, Greater Media), four sets of call letters (WVBF, WCLB, WKLB and now WROR) and four different formats (Top-40/CHR for a brief time at the beginning, then Adult Contemporary, Country, and now Classic Hits).

Joe, you missed one format

Joe, you forgot Oldies. 105.7 was Oldies when the WROR call letters first came back. I'm shocked at you, Joe!
Edited by WMC2005 on 11/24/05 12:50 AM.

Re: Joe, you missed one format

I actually think that's up for debate. The Classic Hits right now is very similar to the the so-called Oldies of the 60s, 70, and 80s that they started with in 1996. Also, remember 2 or 3 falls ago..they were briefly like an old AOR type station with Ken Shelton middays.

105.7 WROR was an Oldies station that, in 1996, was slightly ahead of its
time, playing the occasional 80's hits.
"Nowhere To Run," "Baby Love," "I Want To Hold Your Hand," "Satisfaction,"
"Get Down Tonight," "After Midnight," etc,(1964-1977) were the core hits of
the original
(NEW) 105.7 WROR, The Songs You Remember From The 60's, 70's & 80's!
(try saying that over the :03 intro of "Stop! In The Name Of Love.")

the occasional 80's hits came from Phil Collins & Billy Joel, mostly.

then, the consultants arrived and screwed it all up. trust me. i was there.

thank God Loren & Wally have approximately the same regard for consultants as
they do for parking enforcement professionals.

too bad they didn't include "Illegal Seafoods" or "It Fell Off The Back Of
The Truck Dot Com."

as a proud contributor to the show for a fraction (one-fifth) of their tenure,
i can truly say that they are two of (of many) the nicest
(they give beer by the case at holiday time to struggling part-timers)
and kindest guys you'd ever have the pleasure of knowing in this business.

and Loren is the hairiest. (btw: Loren - new "do" on the back? stylin', bro!)

Hmmm...you worked on the show? And you would be whom, Erie??

One bit I wish they'd included on the CD was something from many years ago, probably from the Christian Paul days. They reran it earlier this year during a L&W vacation when Hank and Tom were hosting for the week.

I cant remember the whole thing (including even the character) unfortunately but Loren was involved and Loren's job was to answer either "That's good" or "That's bad". However, Loren got confused and the whole bit went a bit astray and the main character said something like "If you would just shut up, maybe we could get thru this bit." Too bad I cant remember most of it...but it was very funny!

they actually have aired both versions of that one. they usually do the
"messed up" version, then follow it (not immediately) with the "good" version.

you're right - that IS a wicked funny bit. there are a couple of Christian
Paul CD's kicking around that have some of the L&W stuff on them.
