RHODE ISLAND RADIO LEGENDS HONORED
RI Radio Hall Of Fame, presented by Navigant Credit Union, announces Class of 2009

Warwick, RI – It began as an idea - to preserve the memories and acknowledge the accomplishments of radio professionals who have touched the lives of so many in the Ocean State.

The Rhode Island Radio Hall of Fame was established in 2008, with a goal to celebrate the now 87-year history of the industry in Rhode Island, and to honor the men and women who have played a part in its growth.

The RIRHOF Board of Directors is pleased to announce the members of the Class of 2009:

Jack Comley – with fellow Hall-of-Famer Sherm Strickhouser, Comley is considered a pioneer of the talk radio format in Rhode Island; well-read, informed and provided special attention to the “entertainment” value of radio during the ‘60’s and ‘70’s; avid sports fan that used his public forum to contribute to the construction of the Providence Civic Center. Comley passed away in 1974 at age 41.

George Patrick Duffy – “Voice of the Rhode Island Reds” professional hockey team covering four decades, Duffy is still active as a coach at St. Raphael Academy today, at age 88. He has also been behind the microphone for numerous teams and games since the 1940’s, on WEAN, WJAR, WICE, WXTR, WPRO, WGNG and others.

Carolyn Fox – brought “shock jock” radio into Rhode Island through stunts and promotions on the air; long time ratings leader at WHJY-FM, she also hosted on WPRO-AM and WWRX-FM in the ‘90’s.

Daniel “Giovanni” Centofanti – a fixture at WPRO-FM since the 1970’s, “Gio” has hosted morning drive on 92 PRO-FM since ‘99; valuable production manager for current Citadel station cluster, as well as on-air host.

Jimmy Gray – veteran radio personality dominating airwaves for WPRO-AM/FM, WCTK-FM, WHJJ-AM among others; quick wit and smooth delivery made him a favorite for listeners, and advertisers.

Norm Jagolinzer – Norm is synonymous with “sentimental” and “nostalgic” radio in the Ocean State; distinct, smooth voice and delivery recognized by many through his work on WLKW; consistently at the top of charts in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s.

Jim Mendes – Mendes was one of the key jazz DJs in the state during the '50s and '60s, spinning discs on WPAW-AM, WICE-AM and WJAR-AM. Of Cape Verdean descent, he was also one of the first broadcasters of color in the market. Mendes passed away at the age of 80 in 2006.

Don Pardo – long associated with his work on Saturday Night Live, Pardo began his storied career at WJAR-AM in 1938. He joined NBC in 1944, remaining on the network staff for the next 60+ years. The original “voice” for The Price is Right and Jeopardy, Pardo still performs voice work for SNL today, at age 91.

The official induction banquet for the Class of 2009 will take place at the West Valley Inn in West Warwick, RI on Thursday, May 14th, 2009 at 7:00 pm, with a cocktail reception beginning at 6:00 pm. The general public and radio fans everywhere are invited to attend – tickets for the dinner and awards ceremony are $50 per person (table of 10 $450) and proceeds from the event will benefit the children of A Wish Come True, Rhode Island’s oldest wish granting organization. Tickets may be purchased by calling (401) 781-9199, and additional information may be found by logging on to the RIRHOF official website at www.rhodeislandradiohalloffame.org.

As an added attraction to the Rhode Island Radio Hall of Fame, local radio fans are encouraged to participate as Associate Members, by contributing a one-time fee of $25. For their donation, fans will earn the right to nominate local radio industry professionals for future consideration in the Hall of Fame, receive a discount on induction ceremony dinner tickets, and receive a certificate of membership. The $25 lifetime membership fee is tax deductible, and should be made payable to A Wish Come True, Inc.

For more information on the Rhode Island Radio Hall of Fame, visit the Hall website at www.rhodeislandradiohalloffame.org. The website features information on the formation of the Hall, links to Rhode Island radio stations and websites, and photos with audio clips from the inaugural class of inductees. Fans are encouraged to interact and contribute to the Hall website!

Not to rain on anybody's parade or to sound overly negative, but I sense a touch of political correctness in this years class of inductees. Certainly Carolyn Fox, and Gio deserve to be in the Hall of Fame, there are, however, those individuals who (in my own humble opinion) deserved to be inducted ahead of them. Don Pardo, while a national legend (and his biggest claim to fame was on television), certainly cannot be considered one who shaped the face of Rhode Island radio history.

Bud Toevs, Andy Jackson, Eddy Zack, Mike Sands,Joe Thomas, Joel A. Spivak, and Larry Kruger all deserved the nod ahead of Violet (2008) Fox, Gio and certainly Pardo.

To simply sat that it's only the second year and all these folks will have a chance to be inducted is a poor one indeed. If fame, popularity, innovativness and longevity in Rhode Island radio are not the main prerequisites for induction, what is ?

The people you mentioned are all deserving of induction. I don't agree with you on it not being Carolyn's time as she was the first of her kind, so to speak. I don't think you'll see any one year when inductees are all taken from the same era or for the same reasons so things are going to be spread around year by year. Actually the fame, popularity, & longevity you cited all do point to Giovanni. I'm also kind of surprised his real name was given, but it might have been more of a shock if he turned out to be Irish.

Radio Nut,

If you feel that way, plunk down $25 to become an associate memebr and you can then nominate for next year's class. I can vouch that Mike Sands has been in the running for the last 2 years.

Take a second and go look at the HOF website to look at the the suggested criteria for consideration. Everyone who is in this year's class received a number of nominations last year and just got eeked out from being in the inaugural class. Keep in mind, this is the 2nd year of the Hall of Fame and IMHO, Gio so richly deserves the Hall of Fame ahead of some of the people that you have mentioned because Pro-FM lends a lot of the history of the "sound" of Pro-FM to Gio and his creative work on the imaging.

Wknd, I am an associate member. I agree with everything you and runrigger say about Gio and Carolyn as I stated in my post they are deseving of the hall. I still think folks that were there first (in time) that meet the requirements should go in first. That's all, no big deal, just my own opinion. Thanks.

Funny thing is in about 5 or so more years at a rate of 8 nominees getting in a year you'll probably have pretty much covered everybody who deserves to be in. I'm sure a lot of good radio people have come and gone over the years but many just won't be looked at as hall of fame material.

Yes Bharlow, Gio did many, many voices for Jimmy on his morning show.

Runrigger, how'd your Mom take the transition to DTV? My Grandma did not take to well, with the idea of having a coverter box. On the tv
in the kitchen.

Where do I begin? In a nutshell, she transitioned kicking & screaming with a lot of help from me, for which I'm inducting myself into the RI TV Hall Of Fame. The converter box is always turned on though, as it's one less button for her to deal with.

I think the "Hall" is a bit to easy to be admitted to.

Comely...avid sports fan that used his public forum to contribute to the construction
He was quite a bit more than that. He broadcast hundreds of games and was good. I'm not sure if he was serious about an MLB job enough to send out some tapes, but it may have been his dream job.

Just wanted to remind anyone interested in attending the ceremony this year that tickets are now available by calling (401) 781-9199. The $50 price tag is the same as last year - in deference to the current state of economic affairs, and is tax-deductible. We had a blast last year, it was great catching up with so many who have been in radio around these parts, and networking with those still involved.

Also, if you're out of town, we have made arrangements with the Marriott Residence Inn in Warwick for a discounted rate. Free breakfast and light supper included.

Send me a note if you have any questions - we'll look forward to seeing you!

That's almost more people that actually work on air in Providence

For The Class of '10?

Posthumous: Ted Knight, if he qualified by having-worked-on WJAR radio when he was at WJAR-TV.
'Thought of him in RIRHOF the other night when cable was showing "Caddyshack."
Once, as Ted Baxter on "Mary Tyler Moore," he moaned "Don't tell me I'll have to go back to Rhode Island!"

And how about Meredith Vieira?
In-addition-to being on Channel 10, she did news on WJAR Radio, back when I was at WPRO.

I'm especially curious as to what Holland Cooke has to say about this:

How about Ernie Anderson? See you Thursday, Mr Cooke

RE "See you Thursday, Mr Cooke"

I am under STRICT instructions to keep-it-3:00-or-less.

"The LOVVVVVVVVVVVVVE Boat..."

The Late-Great Ernie did/was-from RI?
I thought he was a Clevelander.
My markets are blurring-together...

APPLAUSE for curiosity, the-opposite-of the business-as-usual that's causing radio so many problems now.

'Haven't seen the Providence numbers.
A bunch of markets got released all-in-one-week, so I've been paying attention to payin' customers.

From several terse posts on that other page, I infer that WHJJ didn't do well?
'Haven't had a chance to hear 'em much.

When I'm home on The Block, and checking-in to hear El Rushbo or Sean, I usually listen via WABC, which is louder on the island. I will hit 920 when I want to hear Glenn Beck, who's unavailable elsewhere locally; and on parts of the island, I lose the signal. In-the-words-of the Yanmar mechanic who works on my boat: "There's your problem right there..."

93.3, on the other hand, booms in loud-and-clear.
