Rick Dees en la mañana: Back on air, in Spanglish

Didnt they do any try-outs before today ?? Usually people will do a try-out show, during night time hours. Just to get the feeling of everything, and in this case, of eachother....

Obviously you don't know Dees show or you'd know who he is.

As for Lopez, she sucks. She has no timing. She doesn't know what to talk about or when to shut up. She adds nada to Dees show. You could put a 1khz tone on and it would be more entertaining than her.

Dees on the other hand sounds great. But he's having to direct her on what to do on the air. She's just not a radio person and isn't getting it.

____________

Oooooowwwww! That's gonna leave a mark.
Why so BITTER?

Doesn't SOUND like he's directing and doing a lot of hand-holding with Patty.

What - are you like there in the studio seeing it all first hand....?

Someone that makes a statement like that obviously doesn't have much experience in radio. It was pretty easy to tell from her first set that she is green. But besides that she's not funny. She doesn't know how to do banter w/ Rick. She's stepping all over him. She sucks.

Rick is doing a great job making everyone "believe' Jack Nicholson has been at the studio all morning. But the interview "sounds" a little too much like a pre-recorded interview. Especially the difference in acoustics.

Rick is doing the show from his own studio/offices in Burbank not KMVN. They've had dry runs. But still this is live on-air. I just don't know why Rick picked her - other than for her looks. There are so many other talented Hispanic females that are in radio not entering it as she is.

Another thing that bugs me is that terror alert color annoncement in the 'Movin News Minute'. For one thing someone tell Clarence Barnes that it's ORANGE today not yellow. http://www.dhs.gov/dhspublic/display?theme=29

Rick has played his cutomized personal version of Justin Timberlake's SexyBack EVERY hour on the hour from 5 am thru 9 am.

Nice show ending with Dees mentioning all those involved with the show and a funny little tribute to Jay Cook.

Dees did a live id at 10 AM and didn't get the calls right. It's KMVN not KMVE.

So, according to all the response, Dees was on top of his game (if we forget the call letter slip) but the rest of his team needs to work on their act ?? Is that fair to say ??

Hopefully I will get a chance to listen to the first show myself by aircheck. Anyways, thanks for the updates, it's mucho grando appreciated !

Glenn, your critique of Patty Lopez was spot-on. Maybe she'll get better after a few months. I remember watching X-Files' very first episode, after many years of watching the show, and I noticed how "stiff" the interaction between Scully and Mulder was in that very first episode compared to several years later. So we'll see in time how it works out on Rick Dees' show and if Lopez can say "DeesGrees" perfectly ;)
The audio quality of Rick and Jack talking didn't match the rest of the audio.. too much bass accoustics.
Rick sounded like he had a blast.

Best bits were the Linday Lohan taped insert excuses why she won't be on the set today and the El Cucuy candid phone. Both were top notch.

I tried to listen to Ryan Seacrest since this is the first time the two have been on opposite each other. All I can say is Ryan sucks. I'm sure Merv would add "good" to that.

Dees shines as a pro but the rest of his staff has some polishing to do. I'd agree. I think the show will need some changes. But nothing radical except possibly lose her.

As for Patty "Long Legs" Lopez, Dees had to keep asking her to translate her spanish. She should have known to automatically do that. I was getting tired of him asking "What does that mean?". He'd also have to ask her at times to say things in spanish. If that is the plan for the show, she should have known better to do so. I don't give her much hope. Not a radio person, not quick witted and not funny. L.A. isn't a place to "learn" the ropes. It's a place to showcase your years of experience. Or at least I thought so.

I'd cut out the newscast or at least make her do it. Since Dees wants to have some fun during the newscast and she is the co-host plus this station is focusing on Hispanic females, it would be better that Dees have the banter with her than Clarence Barnes. At once per hour, he just pops out of nowhere. No more hourly terror alerts, please. I go to Dees show to be entertained and escape reality not be reminded of it for no reason. That had to be the most bizarre thing I've ever heard on an hourly newscast on any station.

I guess Fred Shuster doesn't know what Latino 96.3 does. It's not new, even one jock on KIIS did it in the early 80's.

Timing my boy. Timing.

Yeah but she looks good. Isn't that what it's all about in radio-tv world these days?

Boy i love how everybody on here is quoting demos and thinking they know what everyone wants. Must be a bunch of radio people on here. :D :D :D

Actually that all changed with the debut of the Adam Corolla show.

I worked with Dees at KHJ back in 79-80 and I still think [EDIT](and that ain't duck as is disco) and that he has now approached the stage of being an aging legend who, like so many others, is just glad to have a job and will never be able to capture his former glory. It sounds like his new employer is hoping to do just that though, without spending a lot of money.

[EDIT-vulgarity]

Just curious, but why would anyone say something so negative? Please, let's keep the character attacks out of discussion. Thanks...

I disagree. Lopez is hot - nice voice.
That Clarence dude is the one that's weak. Who is he anyway?

Clarence Barnes is actually a very nice guy. He's been working as a producer
on Dees' Weekly Top 40 and has filled in for him. He's worked in Boston, San Diego and New York(Z100) to name but a few and was most recently weekends and fill-in at KIIS.

Total idiots at InsideRadio.com. They thought Jack was there all morning. I guess Rick fooled them all. Well at least some Clear Channel radio people (since CCU owns Inside Radio) and that's not difficult to do.

From InsideRadio.com

Jack Nicholson spent lots of time helping out pal Rick Dees on his first day back on L.A. radio.
In fact Nicholson didn't just do a quick cameo - he stuck around for most of this morning’s show, Dees’ debut on Emmis-owned “Movin’ 93.9.” Rick’s been off mornings in Los Angeles since his deal with Clear Channel’s KIIS-FM was up nearly 2-1/2 years ago. More celebrity guests
to come?

I say this gently but this sounds like jealousy. Curious how anyone could be this negative...but, then again, it's hid behind the cloak of anonymity.

Who's anonymous? I worked with Dees at KHJ and he came across as an egotistical twit even then. This is show biz and it is common to have strong opinions one way or another about performers, and this is mine.

Sounds to me like it is you that have the ego. Calling people names is the lowest form of argument.

Emmis is going to spend at lot of money on Dees and Movin. Dees is heavily involved in the programming of Movin. You can bet there will be very similar giveaways to the "buy the listeners" promotions that KIIS had in its heyday.

Rick again sounded great today. It's like he's been doing the shift daily for the 2 1/2 years he's been off. So natural and comforatable sounding. What a pro.

Patty "longlegs" Lopez still has a lot of work to do. But there were a couple of times where she immediatly translated her Spanish into English without Rick having to ask today. But she really doesn't add anything to the show that any other bilinguel Hispanic female could...except maybe looks.

Great to hear Dees is "on."

What I don't get, and maybe it's different for L.A. radio, is what is so important about how the sidekick looks? Other than for those in the studio (and the occasional appearance) why would the listeners care?

From what I've read from those that have heard the show, looks as if maybe the best decision wasn't made from a listener's point of view.
