Rick Thomas Named PD of 92.3 Now (soon to be AMP?!)

Interesting that he didn't run AMP in LA.

Not really; in LA they already had Kevin Weatherly doing Amp, Jack and KROQ very, very successfully.

My point is he has no experience with the format.

He's one of the absolute best Rhythmic leaning CHR programmers in the country, having won in markets like San Francisco and San Diego as well as being a native New Yorker.

He also did KSFM in Sacramento and KBBT in San Antonio so he has experience in quite a few different kinds of markets, too.

If there is a hole in NY, it is to the rhythmic side of Z-100 and there is nobody better for that.

Then perhaps it was a little out of character for him to program classic hits and smooth jazz.

KRTH was already moving into the playing of songs that Rick played as currents on his CHR stations.

And KTWV has not beens smooth jazz for many years. It was a smooth AC, moving in a rhythmic AC direction.

Both were appropriate for Rick, but... in my opinion... CBS did not move fast enough to update either format in order to keep the relatively high billings levels.

So now he's transferring to his home turf, and the company can bring someone in to LA who will update both stations.

They have been significantly updated in the last year, and KRTH has increased its 25-54 share but KTWV has not moved. The issue with both is moving the demos without hurting the considerable billings. So the moves have been very gradual and gentle.

DavidEduardo… since I really respect your opinions and find you so knowledgable I have a question for you:

IF 92.3 changes their name, how can they change the perception that its a new radio station if the format will be the same with minor tweaks?
