RIP Christopher Plummer of Sound of Music and Movies/TV

Christopher was a great actor. RIP.
Agreed. The funny thing is that the role he's most well known (and beloved) for is that of Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music. Secrets be told, he despised that movie and thought it was way too syrupy sweet. He also supposedly drank so much during filming that he had difficulty fitting into some of his costumes by the end of shooting.

It was enormously successful. SOM Studio knew what they were doing.

Plummer was an outstanding actor. One of the finest and a master at his craft. The Golden Era of talent is sadly fading (Hal Holbrook was another)...

I never cared for TSOM just for that reason. But I'll admit lots of people lapped it up, and continue to do so. Having Julie Andrews fresh off of her success in Mary Poppins didn't hurt either.

Of course the movie, and the earlier stage play, are almost complete works of fiction. The real story of the Von Trapp family was quite different from that seen on the big screen.

Plummer was a great actor, R.I.P.

Yep. The way Maria (played by Julie Andrews) and Captain Von Trapp (Plummer) came together and married in real life was not as in the movie. Here's a quote from the actual Maria: "I really and truly was not in love. I liked him but didn't love him. However, I loved the children, so in a way I really married the children...But I learned to love him in time." The real Captain Von Trapp was warm and loving. The way he was portrayed as cold and staid in the movie wasn't well received by the family. The real life Maria also didn't teach the children to sing (just taught them certain music) and was not always as sweet as portrayed: "(Maria) tended to erupt in angry outbursts consisting of yelling, throwing things, and slamming doors. In her 2003 interview, the younger Maria confirmed that her stepmother "had a terrible temper... And from one moment to the next, you didn't know what hit her"".
