Robert Stigwood Dies: Produced 'Grease', 'Saturday Night Fever' & Broadway Classics

Robert Stigwood, the former music manager who produced the highest-grossing film musical in Hollywood history — Grease — along with Saturday Night Fever, Tommy and Broadway shows including Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita, has died. He was 81. Stigwood managed the Bee Gees during their heyday, and Robin Gibb’s son confirmed the news on Facebook. He called Stigwood “a creative genius with a very quick and dry wit.”

There are a handful of visionaries in music, and Stigwood was one of them. He not only managed the BeeGees, but also ran their publishing, which was where the real money was, especially for a trio of guys who wrote hundreds of hits. RSO Records, distributed here by Atlantic, was a powerhouse label. He found a way to own it all, from artist, publishing, label, and then bring that combination to the theater, where he made even more money. Incredible. We shall probably not see his like again.
