Rock 100.5 & All News 106.7 - What's wrong with this picture?

So I'm curious - What do you guys say about this?

Rock 100.5 goes alternative (maybe active).

Moves to 106.7 which covers not only Atlanta but also Athens which has a very large rock audience.

All News moves to 100.5 which still covers all of metro Atlanta.


The point would be to test the rock waters in Athens with a stick that can cover both Athens and Atlanta.
 
What kind of rock stations does Athens have these days (not counting college radio)? I know neither 100.5 nor 105.7 reach. River does but that's classic rock. 96 Rock/Project DID. Rock103.7 moved out of Athens a while back.

One complaint people have been having about AN106.7 is lack of building penetration ITP, which is a concern particularly for an all-news format, which has a large LWYW audience (caller10, am I allowed to describe AN106.7 as "Listen While You Work"?).

Swapping 100.5 and 106.7 would be a good move and solve both concerns. Turn off the stereo on 100.5 and the signal would improve.

I wonder if the Braves moving to AN106.7 was a prelude to this, to keep the Bravos on the 100.5 signal but under a different format.

How many young folks listen to baseball on the radio? If Rock100.5 goes more active/alt, they will pick up more listenership after PM drive, when adult formats typically suffer, and that would interfere with baseball. Part of the reason of putting the Braves on 100.5 was that they didn't have a lot of listenership after PM drive with a classic rock-heavy format.
 
Yeah - In terms of rock, Athens has been underestimated. It has the population for modern rock, hints all the small venue rock concerts they have. Even when Project was on the air, they did not get into Athens all that well. 106.7 is a perfect stick to cover both the rock masses of Athens and Atlanta.

While active may do better in the long run, I would not underestimate the ability of an alternative station to go against Radio 105.7 which has been playing it annoyingly safe.

All news 106.7 just got best

All news and The Kimmer wow lots folks will tune in. Kimmer is a hit at drive time and always will have followers. its not about big numbers but news for those whom like all news.
 
I noticed that Mara Davis was on TRG yesterday. Is that permanent? It was refreshing to hear her voice again. I thought she fit in nicely with TRG. Axel was also on last week. Is that going to be permanent or temporary?

A strong Athens signal will do very little, if anything, to help ratings or revenue for an ATL-based station. Few Athens area businesses are willing to pay Atlanta ad rates.

I noticed Rock 100.5 has been playing more real rock and less in the way of sissy music this week, although the latter does still comprise a significant portion of the total playlist. I think they alienated a lot of listeners by veering too far in an alternative music direction (I cannot call that stuff alternative rock), and might have already lost some of the hard rock audience for good. The next ratings report will be quite interesting.
 
They are still doing The Neighborhoods, Atlas Genius, Tame Impala. One could argue the new Muse cd is alternative not active rock.

Alternative is an odd format because it morphs. It goes through stages and right now, it's going through a stage similar to the 80s new wave (which was very popular). Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Manson were all alternative and in some cases, still are but so was Sarah Mclachlan. People mistake alternative for a style of music - It's no more a style of music than top 40. Alternative is cutting edge (suppose to be anyway) and plays the breaking bands. First time I ever heard of Adel was on WFNX in Boston. FUN and Grouplove found their break on Sirius XM Alt Nation. Just what the cutting edge sound is right now. Give it a few months and we might go back into a emo/scremo stage or perhaps even a post punk stage (which is what I'm thinking based on recent album releases).

IF radio 105.7 does not start living up to the "alternative" name and start playing more cutting edge stuff instead of Sail every hour (which came out 3 years ago), then another alternative station could successfully take them on. I will agree that Rock 100.5 needs to go straight active rock though. Drop the old stuff and hit the modern rock hard. Right now, the listeners are not happy with Rock because they don't play enough classic rock or modern hard rock (which is by design).
