Rockin’ MDW- a battle of the decades

KLOS, KYSR, and KROQ all had era-themed programming for the memorial day weekend. Both KROQ and KYSR had 2000’s themed weekends, and I hate that I preferred KYSR. KROQ positioned their weekend as a “countdown” but there was no “countdown” element, no keeping track of numbers, and plenty of repetition. I know I’m probably 10 years late to the discussion, but for a station that pioneered alternative rock, KROQ sound like they’re trying to beat KYSR at their modern alt game instead or relying on their heritage. I don’t know who’s enjoying Billie Eilish and System of a Down on the same station, but it ain’t me.

Meanwhile, KLOS had a 90’s themed weekend, and in the four years I’ve been here it’s easily the most I’ve listened to KLOS in that time. Maybe it reminded me of listening to modern rock WPLY growing up, but I really enjoyed the music mix.

Given the rise in “classic alternative” stations, I’m surprised KROQ isn’t trending more in that direction- they certainly have the credibility for it. Something planted a general decade ahead of KLOS and generally more rockin’ than KYSR. I do enjoy the SOAD and Metallica I hear, but a lot of the time they sound like they’re chasing after KYSR. Maybe Audacy is happy with their numbers, in which case my shouts into the internet void are just where they belong.

I also got a kick Saturday when both KYSR and KROQ were playing Franz Ferdinand’s “Take Me Out” at the same time

If they ever did decide to do that, Freddy Snakeskin and I are available to program. Freddy already voicetracks the Flashback Weekend show for my Albuquerque station so we know how to work together.

I met Freddy when he visited KLVE/KSCA/KRCD with our engineering friend X-Ray. Interesting character!

I do have 106.7-2 as a preset on my little Sparc I use around the house (I wish my car had HD!) but I don’t think that era full-time would succeed on the main signal. They could sure pull from the library though! 91x out of Tijuana is a great example of pulling out deep cuts (though I know just because something works in one market doesn’t mean it’ll work in another)

Let us also not forget that KRTH probably had the best decade theme of the entire Memorial Day weekend - a totally 80’s weekend! I listened to that one the most this past weekend along with JACK-FM doing their “party” themed weekend. Of course I remember not too long ago, KRTH would have their “Firecracker 500” or some other similar countdown show for Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day weekends. That was something I would listen to all weekend long. Now I just casually listen during the holiday weekends to whatever decade theme they are doing.
