Defender’s Roland Martin Debuts as New Midday Host at “The Talk of Chicago”

On October 3rd, executive editor of The Chicago Daily Defender, Roland Martin, made his debut on WVON 1450AM/The Talk of Chicago as the new midday host from 10am – 1pm, replacing hosts Matt McGill and Perri Small.

Martin, a nationally award-winning journalist and syndicated columnist with Creators Syndicate, the founding editor of BlackAmericaweb.com and currently the executive editor of The Chicago Defender, is a frequent commentator on TV-One, CNN, MSNBC, FOX, and Black Entertainment Television (BET). The Houston native is also the author of Speak, Brother! A Black Man’s View of America. Additionally, he is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), the American Society of Newspapers Editors and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Other staff changes at the “Talk of Chicago” include:

-Keisha Chavers, producer of “The Cliff Kelley Show” and “First Light with Sharon McGhee,” is the Director of Station Relations;
-Jerry Riles, formerly of the WSCR 670AM is the producer of “The Cliff Kelley
Show”; and
-Annette Flournoy replaces Sharon McGhee as news director.

Chavers, has been the producer of the award-winning program, “The Cliff
Kelley Show,” for the last 13 years, but has been an employee with WVON for 15 years. She began her career as an intern, then as the producer of “World Objective with Stan West,” and eventually landing the position as executive producer for the station and Kelley’s producer.

Formerly a producer at WBEZ (91.5FM) and a production assistant at WBBM 780AM, Flournoy left her position as the morning-drive reporter and midday anchor at Citadel Broadcasting to join Metro Networks/Westwood One as the news director for WVON.

An award-winning sports producer at WSCR 670AM, Riles brings his brand of radio expertise to “The Talk of Chicago” as the producer of “The Cliff Kelley Show.” Prior to WVON, Riles was the executive producer of “Monsters of the Midway with Dan Jiggetts.”

Hey, thats great. I'll just tune over to 1450AM. Oh, thats in Beaumont. Not sure why you made this post on the Houston & Dallas radio boards.

Maybe if you read the post you would have noticed.

Roland is a native of Houston - graduate of Houston's Jack Yates High School-Magnet School of Communications and Texas A&M University - and has spent nearly all of his career at media companies in Texas. He is the former ME at the Houston Defender and Dallas Weekly, and was the reporter who broke the Michael Irvin drug bust story while news director/morning anchor at KKDA-AM in Dallas.

You are correct, I did not read the article. I apologize for the sarcasm. However, I am compelled to point out that although the gentleman did indeed graduate from Jack Yates High School, he has never been on Houston radio. Until this point I never knew of him. I'm glad for him and its a good thing. I'm pleased a Houstonian is doing well. Getting on a Chicago radio station is to his broadcast credit.

The Dallas boards and the Chicago boards were certainly appropriate, as he has worked on the air in Dallas. The Houston board concerns not only the radio stations, but also the people who are on Houston radio, both past and present. The Houston radio board is what it is. It's not about Houston Television. That is covered by the Texas Television board. There is not one for Houston Newspapers in this venue. In addtition, the board is about the listeners of Houston radio, as well.

Here is the link for 1450 WVON Chicago:

It does have a link on its homepage to listen live.

Now, if you had provided that info as well, it would have been helpful. That way you could encourage those in Houston to listen to Roland S. Martin via the internet.

Here is the link via Radio-Locator:

You will find a link for it's coverage map.

It's on the Texas Television board, as well. I notice it starts with press release. He's posting on the board to promote the show.

You know I've always enjoyed Roland Martin, but I gotta say of the three, Roland, Bill Dance, and Jimmy Houston, that I've always been a bigger fan of Jimmy's. I mean c'mon, Roland catches a fish on every cast!! Who besides me here just ain't buying that? Anyway, it comes as quite a shock to me that he has a radio show. Does anybody know if it'll bee kinda like the Stephenson's old show? You know calling marinas and stuff? Pappy and Bobby were the best.

Have fun Out---DOORS!!!!

Colonel St. James

P.S. Oh and one more thing, where does one bass fish in Chicago?

That's funny, Colonel. That's why the S is used. Roland Martin the fisherman is about 275, blonde and white. Roland S. Martin the journalist is a lot less in weight and black.

Remember when actresses Vanessa L. Williams and Vanessa Williams - former Miss America - had that issue?

Well, Nichole, Roland S. Martin was a frequent guest on KPRC-TV's "Newsmakers" when he was managing editor of the Houston Defender. Second, while at KKDA-AM, he was a presence on a number of D/FW TV stations. So there is a rationale behind the post.

Second, why not make such posts? If an individual is known in some markets, and has since left but is doing work elsewhere, why not alert those who may not have heard?

I've seen a number of posts concerning individuals who left one market and was in another.
