Route 81 wants Spanish-speaking sales people

I just heard a house ad on WNAK for a Spanish-speaking sales person for their Spanish language programming. The contact person is in Hazleton. A full-time Hispanic station is, I'm sure, far in the future if viable at all. But it shows how ethnically active the Valley still is.

I wonder if any of the real Old Timers here (Yonk excepted, but as a historian, included) know if we had stations that programmed in different languages on the weekends.

btw: This house ad is in addition to the never-ending search for account execs that WNAK runs all the time.
 
If I remember correct WPTS used to do Italian programing but I don't know the details.

Right. Every Sunday the Fioranni's ran an Italian show from noon to 2PM. I did the board work on a few shows when the late Norman David Cohen had a wild Saturday night. Mr. Angelo was in the bedroom on the upstairs extension, Mrs. Rose was either in the dining room or the kitchen. They chatted, read birthdays and anniversaries in Italian, did live commercials in Italian, then fed it back to the station where we played a record. The cue was either the artist or name of the song.

WPTS also did a polka show every afternoon at 4pm through the 50s and 60s. Pan Josef was the host. In late 69 or 70, the show was jettisoned and they ran oldies until signoff.

Polka shows were big and are still a weekend staple in this market.

Jim Brando had a Sunday afternoon Italian show on the old WCDL AM and then of course there's "Bocci Alley" which has evolved from an ethnic show to anyone's guess.

Does anyone know exactly what has happened to Bocci Alley. I used to love listening to it, but I don't get it anymore?

Let me rephrase, what happened to the format. I can still tune it in, but it sounds like a hodge podge of music..... ???
 
I think Joseph has lost his way a bit. He no longer plays Italian artists exclusively anymore, has an overabundance of jingles that say his name over and over and runs contests that seem to have a dead end. Great guy in person to meet, wonderful concept but it seems less formatted than before.

I know, it was a great show, if I want to hear Bon Jovi and some of the other stuff he plays I can listen to qfm, magic, easy, etc. I really miss the old format with all italian artists. It brought back the days when my dad would listen to his italian albums. For those to young, albums were the big vinyl round things before CD's. I think it would be a better show if it were live to tape also, it wouldn't sound so processed.
