Rumor: "WKRK Is Over!" 97.1 Free-FM to Sports, D&D Out; 1270 to Talk

Gregg Henson is reporting on his blog (today's entry titled "WKRK is Over!") that this switch is effective to take place as soon as today, and that both stations will be largely laden with syndicated programming.

http://gregghenson.typepad.com/gregg_hensoncom/

Excerpt:

My sources tell me that Terry Foster and his partner Mike Valenti have a meeting Monday morning to discuss their role in the new WKRK as a sports station. There is no doubt that WKRK is going sports, the questions remain; which talent falls on which station.

He goes on to mention that Demenski & Doyle have yet to agree on a new contract; Bill O'Reilly could end up live on 1270; and "Motor City Middays" may eventually perish on 1270.

Who will end up staying in mornings on 97.1 - the incumbent Opie & Anthony, or Mike & Mike which replaced them on 1270 last year - is unclear.

In a subsequent blog, he reports that D&D have "cleaned out their offices".

FYI: Both 97.1 and 1270 stream online.

Re: Rumor: "WKRK Is Over!" 97.1 Free-FM to Sports, D&D Out; 1270 to Talk

What type of talk radio would move to 1270? If FreeFM couldn't work on FM (although it's only been around for how many years?) it wouldn't work on an AM with as many towers as some people have fingers.

Although I like the "FM talk" format, the news/talk market in Detroit seems weak. Sure, 'WJ and 'JR do well, but of the one that talks, the shows are largely stale. Shows like Glenn Beck which haven't been able to find a (new) home due to the lack of stations could well thrive on 1270 if it was promoted right. CC couldn't pull any numbers on 1310 (and guess what, they can't again now either!) as water-cooler talk, but CBS seems like they might be able to mount a better effort. "The X" was REALLY weak.

The two stations are simulcasting now...

The Lineup:

-- DEMINSKI AND DOYLE (6:00-10:00AM) – Jeff Deminski & Bill Doyle
-- THE BIG SHOW (10:00AM-2:00PM) – Scott Anderson & Doug Karsch
-- THE SPORTS INFERNO (2:00-6:00PM) – Mike Valenti & Terry Foster
-- THE BOOK ON SPORTS (6:00-10:00PM) – Pat Caputo
-- Dennis Fithian (10:00PM-2:00AM)
Sporting News Radio 2AM-6AM

I have not seen a weekend lineup.

So I guess they were able to settle on a contract?

According to what they said this morning, they don't have a contract as yet.

Dan Z is still the PD. Craig Schwab is out.

XYT stands for sports -- on AM and now FM

2 great stations with 3 of Detroit's pro teams -- Lions, Tigers and Red Wings. Maybe next year XYT will add Michigan football and men's basketball.

Don't look for Glenn Beck on XYT. His comments about the California wildfires will soon make him unemployable.

Chucky

I never called for Beck on a sports station. I said he'd be on the short list for a talk station. However, don't embarass yourself here by saying he'll be unemployable. He has a relatively new deal with PRN and has added a large number of top stations this year. Clears = listeners = money = what matters. Your politically charged comments mean nothing for the economics of the biz.

BTW, the loving people at the link you provided refer to Beck as a "Mormonofascist". It appears the hatred goes both ways, eh?
