Rumors of Smooth JAzz returning to Denver on 100.9fm

There have been rumors about Smooth Jazz returning to Denver on 100.9 FM. There was an article in Radio and Records that Carol Archer wrote. Has anyone heard about this?

The article in reference stated Marathon Media's 100.9 which is currently Spanish so I take that to be in reference to Bustos Media's KGDQ at 101.9 - it's a typo error in the article. Marathon, of course, sold the station to Bustos 3 years ago and Bustos put the Regional Mexican format on 101.9 from when it was KKCS and a Country format. Bustos has been moving the signal and transmitter closer to Denver since the purchase of the station. KGDQ is currently licensed to Centennial. If the rumors are true that Bustos might want out of the Denver market and will sell that station I think that Smooth Jazz would be a great format on that frequency. Let's wait and see...

The rumor almost certainly was that Bustos, who has been unable to make any inroads in the Spanish-language market, is selling his station with a new owner flipping it to smooth jazz. I don't know who that owner would be, but I think we can probably rule out Denver Radio Company!

I suspect R&R just forgot to update its ownership list and left it showing as Marathon. It was one of Marathon's companies (Superior) that moved KKCS into Denver and unloaded it to Bustos.

A few hours ago I did some searching and the only 100.9 station I found was KNEC out of Yuma and it was broadcasting a adult contemporary format. So my guess like what you said is KGDQ 101.9

It'll most likely be Randy Michaels & his new company when they purchase the Lincoln Financial cluster as well.

This way, sports fans can have an FM sports outlets and jazz fans can have a place too. Either way you look at it, it's a win-win situation for everyone.

BTW...I live in a predominate spanish community here in SW Denver and almost everyone and their mother listens to 101.9 If that's any indicator, then 96.5 could soon find itself in trouble (Or at least in a battle). 92.1 would be wiped out (You can't even hear that station!).

Just my opinion...

Cheers ;)

It's not a sale, it is Bustos and Broadcast Architecture.

101.9 was a no show in the Winter book, while 96.5 is 3rd 12+. In any case, Bustos could not stand up to Pilolin en la Mañana and flipped.

Just my opinion...

Cheers ;)
