Rupert Murdoch kills off news of the World (British Tabloid)

Well this also means that Fox News Radio and Fox Sports radio which is part owned by Clear channel will be under scrutiny too.

The question you haven't answered yet ... scrutiny by whom.

Fox Sports radio is 100% owned by CC, for the record. They pay a licensing fee to Fox for the name.

Heres an indication that Rupert Murdoch's Phone Hacking scandal will come to the USA it turns out the UK government will investigate if Ruperts tabloid operations has hacked into the files of 9/11 victims. Remember when congress passsed and the Bush Administration signed the "Patriot Act" here in the USA it permitted the FBI, CIA and Homeland Security to hack and wiretap emails, and phone calls to see if they are terrorists. Also I remember that the ACLU said that the Patriot Act would cause the CIA, FBI and Homeland Security to abuse their powers back then. I had no idea that it meant media would abuse their powers just to get the story. Now we know who lobbyied for the wiretapping of phones and emails here in the USA.

This is my evidence that Fox News will fall down too.

I partially take back my previous statement that News Corp's other properties won't be affected. The scandal has grown much larger, and the taint will bring some bad publicity to all of Murdoch's corporate divisions. But that's basically guilt by association, and won't go very far.

In terms of any real lasting affect on Fox News, I still think it will be negligible. Unless there is some proof that Fox News staffers or reporters also engaged in phone-hacking, they are legally safe from any sanctions. As to what affect it might have on FNC's ratings, I can only speculate - but I suspect that will be negligible too.

Rupert and his son are going to be grilled by a House of Commons Committee on Tuesday, which should be interesting.

We got "News of the World" Here in the USA but its owned by Time Warner Called HLN. We have TMZ, National Enqirer and NY Post (Murdoch Owned). they have News of the World Personas.

When did this kind of crap ever qualify as hacking? Since when was gaining unauthorised access to someone's voice mail file a means of seeking knowledge? Or exploring the way a system works, or even making a system do something it wasn't actually designed to do? That isn't any of those things.

No, it is not hacking at all and I take great offence with anyone who thinks they can draw any valid comparison to it. It is not even what real hackers do, despite what the commercial ma$$ media will have you believe. Go and read any issue of "2600" and find out for yourselves if you don't believe me.

To repeat: ILLEGALLY ACCESSING SOMEONE'S VOICE MAIL FILE IS *_NOT_* HACKING. Are we clear on that? Good.

So what verb would you insert in preference to "hack"?

"So what verb would you insert in preference to 'hack'?"

Gain unauthorised access to X
Hijack X
Break in to X
Illegally access X
Compromise X
Compromise security of X
Infiltrate X system
(you can think of others, I'm sure.....)

In the real, non-ma$$ media world, hacking is exploring the way a system works, or making it do things its original designer hadn't considered or bothered to implement (like turning a regular MW/VHF receiver into an SCA rig). Gaining knowledge of the way a system functions, for *non-illicit* purposes in a *non-destructive* manner. Illegally accessing someone's telephone to cause the latest ma$$-media $candal is not hacking, nor does it resemble it in any means or form. No knowledge of the system is gained by doing this and no real exploration is involved.

Comparing accessing someone's phone mesage system illegally to "hacking" is basically the same as comparing a laser printer to a manual typewriter. Obviously they are two completely different things.

[size=8pt]Incidentally, I think these last few posts (probably starting with recto101's post above about someone being dead, if not the bulk of this thread in general) should really be moved to the discussion that's already on Off the Air, since they don't really fit into a TV thread/board. Just a thought...
