Rush Limbaugh blew a ton of car dealer advertising on his affiliates this week

Rush Limbaugh just shafted many of his affiliate stations with something he said this week. According to this site (Radio-Info), "Rush Limbaugh says “Nobody wants to support an Obama company.” Remember, he did say he wanted President Obama to fail. Limbaugh is now targeting General Motors, which is working through bankruptcy and now majority owned by the US Government. Rush is being joined by conservative talker Hugh Hewitt, who wrote a recent column saying money spent with GM is “against free enterprise.”

I bet half the local sales managers at stations in his network wet their pants. Does he realize that car dealers and dealer groups are still among the biggest advertisers on local broadcast radio? Does he also realize how many of them include GM makes among the car lines they carry in their stores? At very least, the sales reps who come to them trying to get them to buy a flight of spots on the Limbaugh show will get a cold reception...and those stations may get a frosty greeting for ANY show they're trying to sell.

Would you buy time on a show that insults you and tells people not to do business with you?

If you're a station owner, would you think twice before renewing carriage of a show that insults some of your best potential clients?

Somebody better get to Rush and tell him he's going so far over the top, he's begun biting hard at the hand that feeds him...

Yeah..don't know if I'd have gone there. Wasn't GM a direct rush sponsor for a while with Rush doing live reads? Thought GM was on Hannity. Interesting to see if their are any repurcussions at the station end.

I have often wondered what it would take for Limbaugh and his would-be clones to be sanctioned by station managements. Obviously, continually misrepresenting and insulting a half or more of his potential (as opposed to actual) audience doesn’t cross that threshold - not enough $$$ at stake, apparently. If they indeed lost the business of GM and its dealers, it would be no more than Limbaugh and his enablers deserve, though Limbaugh himself is probably insulated from the consequences of his words by the grotesque contract that the industry was dumb enough to sign on to (at the expense, no doubt, of their current employees - not to mention the ones who have been forced to part company with their radio careers). Limbaugh has the constitutional right to say whatever he wants, but managements have no constitutional obligation to supply the transmitter.

Political ideology aside, one must have a twisted, sick view of patriotism to want to stick it to literally millions of fellow citizens whose livelihoods depend directly or indirectly on GM.

And that's why I'm scratching my head over this report. I"m not a regular Rush listener, but I did happen to land on his show just a couple of days ago when I heard one of these live reads!

Yep, Rush is still doing live reads for GM - same copy that Hannity uses, same plug for "GM Reinvention".

TRI this morning gave this link to the story in the Detroit News:

Heard Rush doing spots for none other than P.I.T.A today!
