Russell Penuell Promoted To PD At Nashville’s “Wolf"

Russell P is okay..& I would agree that he is 'good' It's just that he is not 'great'. Jan Jeffries wouldn't have picked someone that is great. He is too smart for that. JJ picks people that are just naive enough to think they will be able to run their own stations autonomously from the mothership. Unfortunately, that's just not the way it works at cumulus. Corporate runs..err fiercely controls the show. Most people know that. And I will also add that anyone that is 'great' wouldn't touch a cumulus property w/ a ten foot pole. Most that I talk to would rather be out of radio. You definately would make more in another profession than if you worked for cumulus. So, I wish Russell the best, but as far as letting the guy , "do his own thing". Sorry, JJ & Cumulus ain't gonna let that happen.

Well JimmyJames if you noticed I never said he is "great". I said he is "good". But let me rephrase. He is great. And you would have to know the dude to understand. He is one of the brightest talents out there on-air and when it comes to knowing great music when he hears it. Not just because a label rep told him so.

Yes, Cumulus has a lock on what is done and played on-air and that is another reason why I said if he is "allowed to do his thing the station would really come alive". Of course they will not hand him the reigns for complete control. Those days where over long ago industry wide and it's sadder for it. Does the industry have issues? Major ones that it ignores while saying they are moving forward. Would it a better and more interesting product if there were more Russel P's out there. Definately.

What's the over/under on how long this guy will last in the building. I think 6 months was the number for the previous PD...did he make it? John Sebastian would be a good one to bring back...did he not have the best ratings there so far?
The station has evolved into what?
No special niche, and with 3 country FM's and 1 Country AM in the market, who is going to be the first to leave the format?
Even Music City USA can't support that many, can they?

Seriously, look at the dynamics. Crumy changes 97.1 and 106.7 virtually weekly and then lets the Wolf flounder into oblivion by playing the replacement game expecting different results. RQQ is now the worst
rated station, with 50k (other than WNFN - is there an "I" in those calls, btw?) If they had left it pristine
after format tinker #2,398,764 when they evolved (right) from harder rock to the total rock experience they would have ended up with a possible 3.0 share. But, hell no...they are now a lame repeater of NRQ. Someone
give Mac the reigns to that place. He cares! Don't wanna see him and the others as a casulty of bad upper management decisions. Ah, radio 2010. One time ~ maybe they will do something right.

Charley Connolly was at WSM for about a year and a half, after having been let go at CBS in Dallas. He was scared to death of Jan Jeffries, who would make Charley shiver in his shoes on a daily basis. Jan, by the same account, is scared of John Dickey. That's why he never lets a PD shine - too scared the PD will show Jan up and take his job.

Jan Jeffries was described by a PD who fired him as simply "a dull air talent". So how does this guy get the right to tell ANYONE ELSE how to sound on the air? The Dickeys don't see this because Jan sucks up to them so he won't lose his own job. Yet he tanks every station he touches. That's how you get a job and keep it, especially in today's radio. Blow the boss, and S&M your staff. The new motto at ***-U-LESS.

Hopefully they will give Russell P. a fighting chance. And Jan will get what he deserves - a size 12 boot up the wazoo. Sideways. Twice.
