SA and Austin to be combined to one market by 2013?

It's 79 miles from downtown Austin to downtown S.A.
A consolidated market area wouldn't change the fact that the two cities are separate MSMA's.
The media markets WILL NOT MERGE. It's more than a hundred miles from the tower farms near Calaveras to the towers near Lake Austin. Neither market's radio or television stations cover the other; in fact they only overlap in Comal Guadalupe and Hays counties.
Joe Krier is doing his job, but it's pretty meaningless to talk about a combined market area.

very interesting however even if these two cities merged completely like a dallas ft-worth type of metro area, it would take years for the media markets to follow suit.

FYI--
Former Congressman Jake Pickle had proposed Austin build its new airport near San Marcos to serve both Austin and San Antonio. Austin folks thought it would be too far to drive. And some wanted San Antonio to pay half the cost. So Austin decided to build its new airport at the Bergstrom AFB site just SE of Austin.

No, Fred, don't you remember? Austin decided to build at Manor, then came the base closing....
Aren't you glad you didn't invest in that land out east of town?

For the purposes of this board, I abbreviated the history of the various votes. Austin ULTIMATELY decided to build its new airport at the Bergstrom AFB site just southeast of town.

i don't see how combining all the radio and tv stations in serving two different cities at the same time. austin and san antonio are about 79 miles apart. they try with klrn 9 and with kcwx 2 , which wasn't viewable in austin. they would have to put all the transmitters in san marcos and change some am and fm frequencies. another point is also changing some am/fm frequeincies with surrounding cities.

It's just a writer with an article on combining one governmental measuring tool. It has nothing to do with radio or television.

I asked this question a few months back.. Just to see what people would say...

I don't know, I think it's possible and I think it would be great to see Austin and SA as one unit somewhat.. Imagine how large our metro area would be! We'd get all the concerts then lol

Why is this even being talked about? From a radio market perspective, this has absolutely zero chance of ever happening. None. As has already been stated, there is not one station that currently serves both San Antonio and Austin and even if you constructed a Class C FM smack dab in between the two cities it would not properly serve either. This is a complete non-starter and a total waste of time.

prodigy does make a good point about concerts. Same can be said for an NFL team. Too bad the Spurs arena wasn't built near Selma, to make it more convenient to Austin.

Agreed, but Selma's a loooong drive from south San Antonio! ;D
It's a long way from Round Rock, too.

Combining the markets won't make me any more likely to drive to Round Rock, just because I might be more aware of what's there. I doubt that putting commercials for stores at La Cantera on the radio in Austin will inspire many people from Round Rock to make the trip there on a regular basis, either. Until we get bullet train service or some other mode of transportation that makes those distances trivial, there's no value in artificially expanding everyones' trading area!

It's all about travel time. The larger the distance the less likely you are to make the trip. The retailers have already figured this out. That's why the put their stores close to their customers in Austin/Round Rock AND San Antonio.

We have the Outlets in San Marcos (granted they do have a new one in Round Rock) which serves both Austin and SA

And also they are planning this new LStar train that will travel from Round Rock to DT SA..

If SA and Austin had a better transportation system set up it wouldn't be that inconvenient to get to both cities...

Also when you look at The Bay Area there are many times when an artist may go to perform in San Jose and not San Fran or Oakland. So people will make the trip if they really like the artist and on 96.7 Kiss FM they are constantly giving away tickets to see artists in SA... Also sports teams there are tons of people that would commute to see their favorite teams play..

From New Braunfels I can get to DT Austin in 35 minutes and DT SA in 30 (without traffic)... It does baffle me to see that people don't believe that it is possible to see these markets come together, it is evident that within 20 years the population of both cities are going to be well above what they are at now and that would mean that people would be moving into suburban areas like Buda and Kyle and San Marcos and New Braunfels and Schertz which have all had exponential amounts of new residencies within the past decade.. As far as radio goes the majority of the stations in both cities are owned by the same companies, it is completely capable of happening because technology is changing drastically you don't know what may be available within the next 4 years it's out of yours and my hands...

Anyways I could go on and on about this but I'm just an ignorant 18 year old that doesn't know much...

Oh and I must add I did go to a concert at the At&t Center and 104.3 The Beat from Austin was there with their car giving out prizes almost as if they were a SA station....

Special events are always the exception. I make an annual pilgrimage to Houston for their Art Car Parade. We tried having one in Austin but it didn't catch on.
