Sacramento's getting a second country FM on the 4th of July

Sacramento's getting a second country FM on the 4th of July per Inside Radio and the Sac Bee.

Entravision looks enviously at CBS Radio's highly-ranked KNCI and decides to chase it with a "Wolf." Entravision's KCCL (101.9) will drop its classic hits "Boss Radio" format (says the Sacramento Bee) to transform itself into "The Wolf."

I wish them all the best, because a little competition will make everybody step up their game...but I don't see them succeeding in the long run. I don't believe this operator can make a full go at it because they don't spend a ton of coin on staff and talent salaries, marketing, etc. If I'm wrong, I'll apologize to everyone on this board-but I'm confident I won't have to.

Folks, Wasn't there word that Entravision was selling its radio properties? There was sidelong predictions that CC would purchase the 101.9 stick and then put country on. Entercom has been doing the Wolf country bit pretty well in Seattle and Portland, OR. I guess the moniker doesn't have to be owner-specific. Any word from Entercom?

It's already happened. Yesterday's Boss radio is now the WOLF!
I just took a trip to the supermarket and tuned in to hear, surprise,
Country music! RIP Boss Radio

From KCCL's YES.com page, the final old format song would appear to be:

5:51 PM - The Bangles - Manic Monday

and the first "WOLF" song would be:

5:57 PM - Toby Keith - How Do You Like Me Now?!

Well so much for the latest chapters in radio careers of friend Tony Cox, former boss Tom Head, and Rick Shannon, a guy I helped get into the business 30 years ago at Drake-like K145. (damn! has it REally been THAT long? Holy Bazoombas, Batman!) We had fun there.

A housecleaning for the Wolf format. allaccess.com had a "Help Wanted, all dayparts" blurb from Rick Stewart the other day.

So much for Tom's bombastic newscasts. I hadn't heard those until a few weeks ago. The last post to the blog was a week ago on Tuesday (6/27 IIRC).

Rather different than any OTHER Sacramento radio newscast! Or a news and commentary, which doesn't seem to have existed in this market or in the region. Here comes Tom! Watch Out!

How much of Sacramento radio history is Rick Stewart aware of? Fresh Country has already been done here in Sacramento! (But so was "Boss Radio") It's also time to retire the KCCL call sign, and what's up with the same lame image guy voice on every station in the damn country? Enough already!

The image voice I heard yeatsreday was a little "over the top". Could become the single most annoying program element on the station, maybe it already is... Sacramento radio history is most likely NOT known by a majority of the audience, so it may not matter.

Most of Ricks career has been country so maybe this time it will work for him..

Finally, someone CAN do country the right way in this market. Smart to call it Fresh Country, even though, yes the format is elsewhere, but with the current country station being as stale as the bread inside the station's kitchen, Fresh is the right moniker to use. AND, to come in with a jingle package as well, that's what KREL failed to do. Start out like you've been here awhile and make everyone notice rather than just throw something on the air to fill up space.

One of the biggest factors may be the signal...it is much, much better than 92.1. At least it was when I was bouncing around there.

101.9's a rimshot, but one of the better ones in the market.

How come Entravision keeps Larry Lemanski (GM) and Rick Stewart (PD) around ? Changing the format every year or so. Five morning shows in 5 years. Took a station from 5th place to 18th in Sacramento in just a few years. How do these two keep their jobs Entravision get a clue ???

Yes - best of luck to the Boss jocks. I hope they land squarely on their feet. This shouldn't be a problem considering their individual scopes of talent.
