Sale of WCPA and it's FM in Clearfield

Sad to see Clearfield's first radio station has been sold. Equally sad is the dismissal of longtime morning man/PD/GM Bob E. Day. A true class act. Super CPA was a great launching pad for many radio careers. It was a pretty hot sounding Top 40 station in it's day. We'll have to wait and see what the new management does with the station.

I believe Mark VanderMeer was sports director of WCPA in the early 1990s. He went on to State College and is now doing play-by-play for the Houston Texans in the NFL.

Bob Day and most everyone else were offered positions with First Media. Bob was not happy with the way the sale went down without his knowledge, and resigned. Apparently he talked the rest of the old staff into doing the same.

Bobby was a staple in the area, having been on the air since what we know as oldies were currents. He left there once before though for a while, so he may come back one day.

Weren't those stations owned by the local newspaper up there or am I incorrect? Any ideas what First Media will do with QYX's stick? Could it be a repeater for Merf or perhaps 3-WZ?

Yeah, W.K. Ulrich owned the stations as well as the Clearfield Progress. Ulrich use to own, in fact he's the one that established WMAJ then WXLR which XLR changed the calls to WBHV (he sold them to Burbach). After Ulrich passed away I believe his step-son, a lawyer by the name of Rick Mattern owned the stations.

At one time, Bill Ulrich, owner of the Clearfield Progress owned WCPA, WDAD in Indiana, PA, and WMAJ in State College, along w/ the associated FM stations in each town.

I started my radio career at WCPA in 1964. At the time, none of the three stations had FMs; WMAJ State College was the first to get FM, and I have a tape of their first-ever sign-on. All three stations shared a remote truck. WCPA and WDAD had magnetic signs that were used to cover the WMAJ paint job on the truck which remained in SC when not needed in Clearfield or Indiana. Fondly recall the group production man, Croy Pitzer. Before I got my license, one of my jobs was to dub Croy's spots to cartridge after he came to town and recorded a whole reel of stuff. I have the original reel of imaging interstitials he did for "Jeff Hunt's Shangri-La in Sound". Boy, does that sound corny now! Also remember working with Tom Connors who later managed an Altoona TV, and of course, that fine gentleman, community leader and life-long inspiration who remained at WCPA throughout his career - the late Carl Falvo. Every five years when I'd return to Clearfield for my high school reunion I'd visit the station and talk with Carl. Last year not only had Carl passed away, but the station was no longer even located in town. It's now part of the cluster headquartered in Dubois. Sad that these important pieces of my hometown are now gone. - - Jeff Hunt, Roanoke VA
