San Francisco TV DMA dropped to number 8 in the DMA rankings

And if IIRC, the San Francisco market dropped a few notches around 2003 when the NBC affiliation went from KRON to KNTV, licensed to San Jose, and technically in another market. Or has that changed? I know that the KNTV transmitter is now on Mt. San Bruno, between Daly City and SF - so really, it's effectively an SF market station, regardless of where its licensed.

There was another article TV Spy gave where San Francisco watches the least time on TV News out of the largest TV Markets in the USA. This is in contrast to Saint Louis and Pittsburgh. I can see why Nielsen would bring San Francisco's TV market rankings down from 6 to 8.

DMA definitions have nothing to do with the amount of listening.

DMAs are geographical areas based on counties (or portions thereof) and the total households of them. Markets with less growth or no growth may be eclipsed by others that grow faster.

Here is the Nielsen data via TV Spy, which also has a top DMA table for the 2017-2018 season:

"Nielsen is out with its annual rankings of the top local TV markets.

The biggest mover in the Top 10 is the San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose market which drops from No. 6 to No. 8, a loss of -1.5 percent of TV homes vs. the 2016-17 season. New York City, the nation’s No. 1 market, lost -3.7 percent of TV homes, from 7.348 million last season, to 7.074 million this season. New York makes up about 6.3 percent of the entire U.S. TV universe, down from 6.4 percent last year.

Elsewhere in the Top 10 Washington, D.C. moves up one spot, from No. 7 to No. 6. Houston moves from No. 8 to No. 7. Atlanta and Boston switch positions: this season Atlanta is No. 9 and Boston is No. 10
"

It's important to note that TV and radio market definitions for San Francisco (as well as most other markets) are different.

The San Francisco DMA includes San Jose.

The full DMA is made of these counties: Alameda, CA ~ Colusa, CA ~ Contra Costa, CA ~ Lake, CA ~ Marin, CA ~ Mendocino, CA ~ Napa, CA ~ San Francisco, CA ~ San Mateo, CA ~ Santa Clara, CA ~ Solano, CA (Split) ~ Sonoma, CA

That is true though for Solano County the border between Sacramento TV Market and San Francisco TV market is in Fairfield, CA and Suisun city. Vallejo and Benicia are outright San Francisco TV markets while Dixon, Vacaville and Rio Vista are in Sacramento TV DMA
According to the maps I seen though.
