There was another article TV Spy gave where San Francisco watches the least time on TV News out of the largest TV Markets in the USA. This is in contrast to Saint Louis and Pittsburgh. I can see why Nielsen would bring San Francisco's TV market rankings down from 6 to 8.
And if IIRC, the San Francisco market dropped a few notches around 2003 when the NBC affiliation went from KRON to KNTV, licensed to San Jose, and technically in another market. Or has that changed? I know that the KNTV transmitter is now on Mt. San Bruno, between Daly City and SF - so really, it's effectively an SF market station, regardless of where its licensed.
The San Francisco DMA includes San Jose.
The full DMA is made of these counties: Alameda, CA ~ Colusa, CA ~ Contra Costa, CA ~ Lake, CA ~ Marin, CA ~ Mendocino, CA ~ Napa, CA ~ San Francisco, CA ~ San Mateo, CA ~ Santa Clara, CA ~ Solano, CA (Split) ~ Sonoma, CA
