Saturday Night Live 11/7 with Taylor Swift (Review as it happens)

SNL is back live after a 3 week break.

FINALLY, the show opens without a Fred Armisen/Barack Obama sketch although Armisen was in the sketch but barely said a word (maybe they listened to us). Kristen Wiig led the sketch as Greta Van Susteran.

Musical guest and host Taylor Swift opened with a pretty funny monologue. Yes, she did mention the Kanye West/Awards moment in her Monologue Song. While I'm not a huge fan of hers (or country music), gotta say the girl is pretty cute.

Taylor is now in a 'The View' sketch playing Kate Gosselin of Jon and Kate. Not bad but Kristen as Elisabeth Hasselback got more laughs. Featured player Jenny Slade does a fairly good Barbara Walters (although Cheri Oteri from a few years back was better).

The Firelight (The Franks) sketch was lame.

Hollywood Dish (Taylor, Kristen again and Bill Hader) sketch wasn't bad.

Commercial break: January Jones hosts next week. Musical guest will be Black Eyed Peas.

And, by the way, for anyone still wondering, Don Pardo (or his voice) is still announcing.

Teens Raising Awareness About Awful Parent Drivers (Taylor and...you guessed it...Kristen) was ok...for the final 3 seconds of it because I missed it. Sorry. ;D

Taylor's first musical number (the one about "She wears short skirts...") was pretty good. I'm pretty sure she didn't lipsynch. Taylor does look good in little dresses. Couldn't help but notice the female members of her band were wearing even shorter skirts. Taylor isn't a horrible musical performer. Hopefully, she'll get better with age. She's 19?? Good thing she's blonde and pretty. Her number was introduced by castmember Kenan Thompson. Apparently, Kristen Wiig was busy for those 10 seconds. :D

This is a pretty solid episode. Taylor is doing a nice job as host and performer, and Meyers' Weekend Update is the funniest I've seen in a while.

Weekend Update with Seth:

-Fred's 'Nicholas Fein' character comes back for the first time this season. He's the guy who reads headlines and semi-reacts but doesn't say anything. I've always liked this character. Now if Fred opened the show as Nicholas rather than Barack Obama, we'd be much better off. Good job.

-Jenny Slade as Sarah McLaughlin talking about Lillithfair. I wasn't amused but she got lots of audience laughs.

-Best story moment for Seth: a woman appeared on the Tyra Banks show saying she had two vaginas and two uteruses and gets double PMS. Seth said there were "alot of holes in her story." HA!

-Yeah!!: Amy Poehler pops in for "Really! with Seth and Amy". (Noticeably absent: Don Pardo voicing "Really! with Seth and Amy")

Overall, a very good Weekend Update this week and you can't go wrong by bringing in Amy Poehler to close the segment. For a woman who left the show last season, she's shown up fairly regularly since then.

Kristen is back as Penelope, the annoying woman always trying to one-up everyone. Taylor involved along with Sandberg, Hader, Jenny and others. Not bad but could have been better.

The ATT commercial with Mariah Carey wasn't too bad. Oh my.

Taylor and Kenan playing prisoners talking to juvenile kids (Hader, Samberg, Sanz). This is a sketch where Hader started laughing last season. They played a rehearsal clip of that sketch a few weeks ago during the Bud-sponsored show where Hader REALLY broke up during the rehearsal sketch. Last season's was better. This one isn't as great.

Oh wait, Hader almost broke up again. But not quite. Wait, now they all broke up. Hader is losing it. Not that bad after all.

Don't you just wonder what goes on at rehearsal every week? Thank God they showed those clips a few weeks ago.

Taylor and Nasid ?? (the featured player) playing two VERY close roommates. Sandberg playing Nasid's boyfriend not getting much attention.

I'd say this sketch is the weak link of the night.

I'm suddenly noticing something else. Maybe it's my imagination but there hasn't seemed to be an enormous amount of staring-at-cuecards tonight aside from Update and occasionally with Taylor.

Taylor is looking very elegant for her second musical number. Seems there was a technical glitch coming back from commercial as no one was on-camera introducing her but I did hear someone shout her name. Sounded like Amy but can't be sure. I half-expected Taylor's BFF and recent tour partner, Kellie Pickler, to show up for that but I guess not.

Lots of close-ups. I'd have to say Taylor is singing live (no lip-synching). Great job by her.

Final sketch of the night: 'Bunny Business' with Armisen as Randy Newmen; Kristen as Natalie Merchant; Taylor as Shakira; Sandberg as guy from Counting Crows; Jenny and Hader as Christina Aguilera and Eddie Vedder; Kenan as Jennifer Hudson. Sketch started bad but got better. But still 2nd lamest sketch of the night (Roommates was first).

Quick goodbye with Taylor thanking Amy P, Lorne Michaels, the cast and her band. I assume it was Amy who was supposed to introduce Taylor's 2nd number. Taylor said hosting SNL was the best week of her life. Really??? I'd think winning those awards might have been better. ;)

Overall, though, this was the strongest show of the season so far. Great job Taylor Swift!

January Jones hosts next week. I have no idea who she is. ???

Anyone wanna "blog" next week's show?? ;D

Thanks for the SNL report. I've been so busy watching The Godfather movies on AMC all day that I forgot it was Saturday. Lol Kinda mad that I missed the show, but I'll find it onlne tomorrow. And FYI, January Jones is the hot Blonde actress that plays Donald Drapers wife on Mad Men. I def won't miss it next week! ;D

I actually almost missed the start of SNL because, instead of watching my local 11pm news, I caught the first half hour of the brand new Wanda Sykes Show on Fox. I have to say it was pretty funny and I'm not even a Wanda Sykes fan.

In the future, if SNL isn't funny, I'll be switching back to Wanda. NBC needs to watch their backs.

And, interestingly enough, on that "The View" sketch, Kenan as moderator Whoopie Goldberg actually mentioned Wanda Sykes as one of the next day's guests. Just a little NBC dig at Wanda and Fox, you think?? :D

I give the 7 November SNL a solid Thumb Up. Taylor Swift did a good job with her characters. I've never watched/listened to the music artists and this time wasn't any different. No real surprise guests other than Amy Poehler but that's almost like Darryl Hammond appearing: expected during some point in the season. I did laugh at something during every sketch.

I really liked the opening sketch. When I closed my eyes it did sound like Greta Van Susteren. However Bill Hader didn't exactly get Shepard Smith. Jason Sudeikis was a great Glenn Beck, especially with the body language, but he would have been excellent if he had the correct hair color.

WMC, thanks for the running commentary. Two things: you said that (Horatio) Sanz was in the Prison sketch but that was Bobby Moynihan. Insert joke. Also, (fake?) Don Pardo did announce "Really?!?" With Seth & Amy.

Actually, I think it was the other new woman, not Jenny Slate, playing Barbara Walters. I agree that Cheri Oteri's impression was much better. Anyways, Andy Samberg's impression of Nicholas Cage during The View, at least vocally, was dead on perfect! It was nice to see Amy Phoeler again. The opening sketch showing FOX News' obvious Republican lean was great! Lastly, I think it was actually Abby Elliott who played Sarah Mclachlan. :D

Geez, you people are picky. :D

I was probably too busy typing that Amy showed up to notice that Don Pardo announced "Really!"

And you know how when you are typing and trying to quickly remember names and the right ones aren't coming to you but you think you remember so that's what you type and you can't quickly tell the difference between Abby Elliot, Jenny Slate, and the other woman whose name I can't pronounce or spell? Nasid? Nasad??

So you people just better be happy that I did what I did for you, ok?? Thank me very much! :D :D ;D ;D ;D

And for the West Coast feed, Amy Poehler did introduce the second musical number.

I was pretty impressed by Taylor Swift's performance all night long. Frankly, I expected that SNL would have someone walking on-set during every sketch to take a microphone from her, beating the Kanye incident to death. Instead, they did a nice reference during the monologue song and left it at that. She can have a career outside music if she wants it. Then again, with NINE singles in the current Billboard Pop Top 100 (a record only bested by The Beatles), her musical career seems more than a bit on track.

Again, thanks for the running commentary. I agree that it's tough trying to type and watch and get things right. Unless it's your job/business, I expect mistakes.

The two things I brought up was "Sanz" instead of "Moynihan" which was an honest error. The "Really & Don Pardo" you phrased it as Pardo didn't announce it, not that you weren't sure if he announced it or not.

You are correct, sir, I missed Pardo announcing "Really" which is why I typed that he was noticeably absent from that segment. Obviously, I missed it. I probably did hear him but it was while typing that Amy was back for the segment and somehow it escaped through the hole in my head. I sowwy. :D
