Savannah, GA - 98.3 JACK FM (WGCO) Reverts Back To Oldies 98.3

All Access reported the news today. As Oldies 98.3 and at one time 98.3 COOL FM, this station has been a favorite in this city for a very long time and WGCO had been with the format since at least 1990 before it flipped to Variety Hits as 98.3 JACK in October 2005.

So, Oldies 98.3 is back! I'll get my JACK FM fix from WCBS or elsewhere online.

Bravo to the WGCO team! Sorry, CJ. Still love ya, but this birdajack is exactly what should never have happened.

Tell both of them they should have answered the phone when Arbitron called to place diaries in their households.

This Jack was marketed. The signal is fine in majority of the metro.

So... Was the hole not really there, or was the satellite music mix not quite right for the market?

I think satellite's mainly the issue. Interestingly enough, JACK listeners are smart enough to want local, live radio programmed for them specifically, not some canned national "one-size-fits-all" feed from the bird (UNLESS of course its Sirius/XM) --- but what no one
thought about was that live and local radio did not require actual airstaffs.

Did any of what I just said make sense???

Well, yes and no 98.3 JACK FM was marketed here in Savannah. Other than airing commercials for the station on our NBC affiliate, WSAV, and sporadic billboards around town, there wasn't alot of promotion. No remotes, no promoting local events with the station.

Alright, fine...but what am I going to do with the emails I got from the pissed off JACK listeners?

CJ

I'm sorry to see JACK FM leave the market. Freedom 92.3 is non-existent.

One simply cannot measure the loyalty and devotion of the radio listeners in this area to Oldies 98.3 (I keep thinking of that Bible quote - "My name is legion, for we are many.") It's a Savannah institution and in its original incarnation, it was here since at least 1990. One does have to hear it to see why Oldies 98.3 has resonated so deeply with generations of listeners. It's a really great-sounding station, expertly programmed and fun to listen to.

Sorry to see JACK hit the road, CJ. I hope it makes a triumphant return someday soon. I'll be listening. Until then, I'll get my JACK FM fix from WCBS and KCBS online.

If the (oldies) station started in 1990, it really can't have "resonated so deeply with generations of listeners"...maybe one generation.

CJ

P.S. I continue to get emails from listeners to 98.3 JACK-FM, who hope against hope that JACK just moved "somewhere else on the dial" or that it will return soon on a better station.

Oops! I should have said "resonated so deeply with listeners of all ages". :D My mistake - sorry!

What did you expect? One of the originators of the variety hits format has been a force in Savannah since 1991. Q105.3 has been following the WMMO Orlando template almost since its sign-on. And they do it with actual local talent, and actual marketing dollars. Triad's halfhearted attempt at satjacking was bound to fail.

Jack was awesome. The only decent station in this city. Even our NPR station is mediocre, with it's 'all classical music until All Things Considered' format. I have to get my NPR fix from SC.

Jack was the only other station I listened to on the dial. Now I've got a cruddy oldies station, playing tired songs constantly.

Jack played old songs. and New songs. And just great content. You could listen for 15 minutes, and hear at least one song you knew and liked. Can't say the same thing about the Oldies station. And no one called me about some Arbitron diary, thank you very much.
