SaveWRKO: Rumor (I stress, rumor) has WBZ cutting Leveille, Dyett

I caught the last fifteen minutes of Morgan on what he said was the final Steve Leveille Broadcast. Fittingly, Generosa was the last caller, and was understandably saddened. She's been a mainstay on that overnight shift for years and somehow I don't think she'll be a regular caller on whatever syndicated fare CBS has in store for us. Morgan did a fine job of closing it out with a very classy tribute to Steve Leveille.

The whole tone was fairly ominous though (I thought the same thing listening to Dan Rea during my drive home earlier in the evening, particularly when he was encouraging callers to keep calling and listening with more fervor than usual). I think its entirely possible that the remaining talk programs (incl. Rea and Jordan Rich) may be in jeopardy as well.

Its a sad day for WBZ.

I was a flip the dial kind of gal until 25 years ago when my husband introduced me to late night radio. I have enjoyed Radio Steve and was sad to here he would not be returning.
I stopped listening to BZ day time radio when they went to the "all news" format. I call it "barf" radio. When you keep regurging the same spoonfuls of crap every 12 - 15 minutes it is just barf. I found that the rest of the dial was all "morning drive" which is nothing more than "state hospital dripple", so I simply just shut off my radio on the way to work. I don't need my head filled with barf or dripple the first thing in the morning...it is simply not healthy! Perhaps that is why there are so many fender benders in drive time because too many people are listening to that stuff! Steve was a nice combo of intellect and fluff! I got hooked and would listen to him at a variety of times depending where I was in my life at the time. I know the change in format is like a train coming full steam down the tracks, but at some point we all need to put our collective feet down and say enough is enough. Steve's was the last local programming overnight, the last place where you could express your opinion. Boston has been silenced! Freedom of speech is fleeting quickly people. We have no TV programming that is worth listening to even the paid stuff is recycled, our print media is all owned by the same narrow minded outlets, and the last free voice in Boston has been silenced. I will write to the powers that be, but to me WBZ is simply silent air waves. Support Steve and what he represents. If we don't have people like Steve then we don't need places like Emerson College, the local Broadcasting Programs!

I only tuned in at the very start and heard Morgan still refer to it as the Steve Leveille Broadcast; there was the theme, etc., and no mention of what was going on. He was prob. told to keep quiet about it till maybe the very end; I wasn't interested in first topic and tuned out, etc and was tired so caught up on sleep, etc.
Apparently acc. to a post on SaveWRKO blog though he did get a call about it at 12:15 am and I don't know how many other calls came throughout the night though here, and on the blog, it's mentioned that Morgan
talked about Steve and took a call or so (Generosa was mentioned) at the very end.
I don't know how many people knew (those on the radio boards like here knew and maybe some saw the
note in the Herald, though it was tucked into the end of an article, etc. rather than "headlined"). Many
regular callers may not find out till Monday.

..unless Morgan wasn't informed about the decision (someone on boston-radio-interest said Morgan was
surprised by the news, I think). Morgan from what I've heard isn't online too much if at all or maybe was
too busy w/ other stuff, etc.

Morgan said that Steve was scheduled to be off NYE, and New Years Day weeks in advance. He also seemed in the dark as to who was let go, and what was going to replace the show. I agree with the earlier post that he handled the show with class, but what else do you expect from Morgan White.

To be honest I haven't listened to Steve with any regularity in a few years. I am sad that he's going though. He and all the 'BZ talk shows have a loyal fan base. When I heard Generosa almost in tears at 4 55 this morning it was one of the sadest things I've heard. Norm Nathan is the reason I started to listen to talk radio. When I was a kid playing with my Walkman one night around 92-93ish I heard him telling a story. It was like listening to my grandfather talk to me, only less swears. Since then I've enjoyed Bob Raleigh, Steve, Jordan, Morgan, Levelle.... and even Bradly J. As much as I enjoy Coast to Coast, and some XM overnight offerings it was always nice to flip on WBZ for local overnight talk.

If they drop local programming over night, the is pretty much the first nail in the coffin of WBZ as Boston's top radio station. If the programming is not there, then the listener's won't be either.

When the local stations drop good local programs, they are handing the keys to the kingdom over to Sat. radio and the internet (ironic since WBZ trys to get people to listen to their programs via the internet, but there is no need to listen to a syndicated show on WBZ over the internet since I can get it anywhere).

BTW: I have to wonder who is editing the web site. People who have been gone for months like Bob McMahon and Jim Mitchell are still on it, yet Steve is gone already.

Part of the reason I find myself so bothered by Steve's dismissal is the Norm Nathan connection. Steve, Jordan Rich, and even Morgan to a certain extent, are all Norm's proteges. Steve was particularly close to Norm, and though he'd be the first to say that there was only one Norm Nathan, he tried his best to carry on the type of lighthearted, comfortable overnight program that Norm did so well. It seems that Boston has seen the last of the Norm Nathan or Larry Glick style radio program and, for me at least, that's a sad thing.

I've seen a blend of praise and criticism for Steve both here and the Save 'RKO blog and while I agree that he can go slightly overboard on the political stuff, he has been a great voice to have in that time slot over the last decade.

Where else can we hear moonbat insomniac shut-ins with speech impediments calling up to complain about the eviw Bush adminiswation?

Well, I guess we're going to be all hopey-changey in 2 weeks, so it doesn't matter.

The St.Louis board says this will be the replacement.

Morgan said he wasn't told anything, which is strange. He worked almost two days straight, with the morning shift and appearances. I got some vibes from Steve that something was up, but he may not have known either.

To the people who want to write letters, this is corporate. They won't care. No matter what your feelings are concerning the talent involved, this is a big loss.

This post from a St. Louis blog called "Mike Anderson's St. Louis Media Info and News" may answer the question, "Why St. Louis"?

"Thursday 01-01-09: The CBS-Minneapolis-Boston-St. Louis radio link ...
CBS News/Talkers WCCO in Minneapolis and WBZ in Boston are cutting back, letting air talent loose, continuing the deep cuts intended to shore up their sagging bottom line. Several Twin Cities news articles and at least one regional MB have suggested that the all-night vacancies will be filled starting Monday by a "syndicated show out of St. Louis."
Since there are no relevant syndicated shows originating here, it might be more appropriate to say a "show syndicated out of St. Louis."
And since both stations are CBS O&O's and KMOX PD Steve Moore is also CBS News/Talk VP, it's probably not a stretch to say that some lucky KMOX talk monkey is going to be heard from The Land of a Thousand Lakes to Beantown and everywhere inbetween.
Who will it be? The money going into the weekend is on Jon Grayson, but, well, until Monday, only Mr. Moore knows."

I tried to see whether anything would get mentioned by a caller to the Jordan Rich show, but he had on some paid "guests" hawking new age snake oil crap about going to their "healing center" ::) to get your energy aligned ::) ::) ::), so someone with more stamina than I have is going to have to fill us in...

2:00 hour... Jordan made a reference to "changes" that he won't address specifically on air.
Starting Monday: "Overnight America" with John Grayson (not sure of the spelling).

Jordan confirmed that Jon Grayson will be the host Sunday night, starting at 1:00 am. A quote from the KMOX website;
He has two sons, BJ the football star and Cam the hockey star.
Dear God, I just can't handle any more sports talk, I'm sorry guys...

However, this part interests me;
Jon plays guitar, reads voraciously, and is restoring a 1958 Plymouth.
I may warm up to him, we'll see...

a lot of Jordan's guests are pathetic, especially the "new agey" ones...

His whole show is pathetic. All interviews are pre-recorded days before and they're all about pushing someone's products. people he interviews. It's like one of those staged ads where a wellknown Dj interviews Roseanne Barr about her Vegas shows..All cheese, all the time.

I didn't think this could get much worse, but. . .

Jordan also mentioned in the 2:00AM hour that Kim Komando, America's self-proclaimed "Digital Goddess", will be heard on 'BZ starting this Saturday night. According to her website, she'll be on from 8-11PM. I assume that Jordan's starting time will be moving up from 12:00AM to 11:00PM.

Another question. . .in St. Louis, Grayson is only heard M-F, 11PM-2AM CST. Do we know if he'll be on for the full five hours here in Boston or are we in for a steady diet of infomercials and replays between 3AM-5AM?

katzradio,
You'll be happy to know that I don't do "sports talk." Although I do, from time to time, talk about sports...it's just not a big part of the broadcast. My son Cam was, however, named for a Bruin...coincidence that he's always been into hockey.

Oh, and if you want to see the newest axe, she's here: http://s78.photobucket.com/albums/j106/Trogdor42/Gibson Les Paul/

I don't have any good pics of the Plymouth up yet...I will as the restoration continues.

Enjoy! Talk to you Monday.
