Saw an interesting thing at Smokies Park last night (re: 100.3/98.7's van)

As I walked up to the gate for last night's Smokies game, I noticed the WNOX van parked in front. ALL the "WNOX" lettering and graphics have been removed...EXCEPT for lettering which denotes "wnoxnewstalk.com." So apparently, Citadel is going to keep and continue to use the wnoxnewstalk.com domain, which I assume they own (?)

You could tell the lettering had been removed recently and quickly. You can see the outline on the side of the van where the large WNOX 100.3 logos used to be. They've been replaced by a much smaller sign which simply says "NewsTalk 98.7FM." On the hood of the van, everything has been removed except for the "100." No calls, no slogan, nothing except for "100." LOL!

They might as well register a new domain. They still mention wnoxnewstalk.com on air but no mention of WNOX anywhere else. They are so screwed.

I agree, I think they are screwed. I bet Hal is p'oed. I hope this isn't the straw that pushes him to move on to a larger market. I've always been surprised he has stayed in Knoxville, considering his popularity and the obvious fact that he could do well in a larger market. I'd like to see him eventually move to 100.3, but that would require sitting out a non-compete for who knows how long. I really don't care as much about Phil, but I'd hate to see Hallerin go.

Clue on HHH moving to a bigger market. He was in Nashville for about a year and then they brought him home cause he couldn't swim in that big a pool.

HHH did two hours on WGFX, 104.5 The Zone, for the Nashville market each day when his Knoxville shift ended. The station had just gone talk, mostly to provide a home for the afternoon sports show that had moved over from another station. They had him doing a local talk show, although he was based in Knoxville, so he really couldn't do much to develop enough exposure in town. The talk competition for his hours was an extremely popular host in Nashville. Also, in the beginning, he had weak lead-ins, and by the time the station developed a strong lead-in, HHH found himself the lone non-sports program on the station. Public sentiment had been pushing for The Zone to go all sports, and they finally did, dropping Hal to do so at about the same time he was beginning to find a niche in Nashville.

All that to say that HHH didn't leave Nashville airwaves because he couldn't swim there. Had the station remained a mix of talk and sports, I have no doubt he would still be on the air. He was given a great nickname by one of the other talk hosts on the station: Hollerin' Hank. Needless to say HHH outlasted that host...

I agree, you can't blame HHH for Nashville. I lived there at the time and remember WGFX being a mish-mosh of sports and talk and whatever else. Then Cumulus signed on ESPN radio on WNFN 106.7. Citadel got nervous and flipped WGFX to all-sports. It worked. WNFN failed and WGFX survives.

Ok it was the stations fault he left. Nashville has some really GOOD talk folks. HHH is well, just HHH. Truth be known and all..you know just saying...

Drove past the Citadel building tonight. The van in question was missing. I hear they've taken it to the shredder.

He was there as a temp. As the host. Not the sidekick. And he got PAID in money to do it. And didn't have to beg.

How 'bout you, sidekick?
