SCI FI Channel Becomes Syfy On July 7th With "House of Imagination"

Yet another channel who modifies their name so they can get away from the niche programming which made them worth watching in the first place:

AMC (American MOVIE Classics ?)
CNN (CABLE News Network ?)
HLN (HEADLINE News ?)
TLC (The LEARNING Channel ?)
Tru TV (Court TV ?)
MTV (MUSIC Television ?)
A & E (ARTS & Entertainment ?)

And that's only some of the basic cable channels I can think of.

..which tried to exist as "The NATIONAL Network" there for a little while prior to SPIKE TV's arrival.

I would not at all be surprised if TV Land ends up changing their name within the next year or two. And the way they are way into "TV Land Prime", I bet that is what they will start calling themselves..."Prime".

Sounds like the move to Syfy is like "new Coke". But it's NBC. The network whose slogan is "we USED to have Seinfeld, Frasier, Cheers and ratings". We should all have jobs with impressive titles, huge salary, nice perks and golden parachutes and be clueless like the folks who run NBC and Universal.

I agree on TVLand. That's one of those you look at and ask why. Their new series are crap. Those classic TV shows have multi generational appeal. You have to wonder as frequently as they juggle the schedule and never promote anything but specials and new series, are they TRYING to chase away viewers so they can justify changing the name to the people above them?

I'll still ask, how do we get Directv, Time Warner and others to import the Space channel from Canada and drop Syfy (boy that just looks wrong) instead?

Get ready they will trash Si Fi channel.

Here's some cable channels with these names,C.R.A.P. TV Reality all the time. , WSHT Sh$t channel, you video it we play it uncut.

Here's another one for ya....

G4 - ZDTV?? (But after Ziff-Davis became a part of CNET, which is now owned by CBS)

I mention this because some of ZDTV's shows (At least in some form) wound up moving to G4 once ZDTV was dissolved (As did much of its staff).

Cheers :)

Right now, They are doing their annual Fourth Of July TWILIGHT ZONE marathon. Next year, The New SyFy, will probably replace it with a annual COSBY SHOW marathon. What's next for SyFy? NHL Hockey? Leave It To Beaver? Saturday Night Live reruns? Maybe MORE INFOMERCIALS per day? Who Knows? What I Know Is That There Will Be Less Science Fiction And More Other Genres Shown On The New SyFy! :D

when you have the full dish package, yet scan in vain for an episode of
Cheers, Hogan's Heroes, or the Dick Van Dyke Show, things have reached a very
sorry state indeed

TV Land banks more money for the reality shows and in-house specials, and it ends up paying fewer royalties to the studios for off-net re-runs. Often, the shows used for 'TV Land Prime', they already had the rights to them in some fashion on another Viacom channel (like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Married With Children on Spike, The George Lopez Show on Nick @ Nite, etc).

Initially Syfy's new rebranding design on their website and on air reminded me of Apple. But then somebody made mention that it kind of evokes the design elements of FedEx.

http://www.syfy.com

Wow.

Everything's all shiny and new-looking, save for the forums.

I really hope that, with the launch of Syfy, they don't foresake the genre they were founded on. Hopefully I won't turn on Syfy in three years and see reruns of Perfect Strangers.

But as their new brand film illustrates - http://www.syfy.com/imaginegreater-, I think NBC Universal wants Syfy to be a quirkier genre-tinged version of their sister channel USA Network.

Anyone notice on the bottom of syfy.com that they are still using the Sci-Fi branding in UK, France, Spain, Japan, etc.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/jul/07/sci-fi-rebranded-syfy

The UK Sci Fi channel, which is also owned by NBC Universal, is expected to be rebranded under the Syfy name later this year.

SCI FI Channel will become Syfy in all of those other aforementioned countries as well. The channel's in fifteen countries and will be in 50 by the end of the year.

One exception? SCI FI will remain that way in Poland due to the connotation that the word Syfy brings up in the Polish language.
