Scott Pelley no longer CBS Evening News anchor; will focus on 60 Minutes

While not out of the realm of possibility, I doubt that will happen. Rose is doing well with the Morning News.

Pelley managed to keep CBS in a distant third in a three network race for less than half of what they paid Katie Couric.

Wow, that's sad news! I enjoyed watching Scott Pelley. He was easy to understand and had a calm demeanor. Guess CBS loses an evening news viewer...again (I didn't watch for part of Katie's run), and I become a permanent Lester Holt watcher.

As far as I'm concerned, they can bring back Bob Schieffer - though he may not want it. I love Charlie Rose, but making him a news-reader would be a waste of his talent. I agree with BigA - the importance of network evening news is diminishing. I don't think I've seen any of the three in maybe 5 years - even if I'm home.

I think this is a shame. Not that I watch network news any more. But I watch Steve Hartman every Friday and he's usually there to introduce the story. Charlie Rose has a nice way of talking when he's there.

Wasn't Bob Schieffer the host that got canned shortly after mentioning the TPP on his sunday show? If so, I would welcome his return, but if that was all it took to take him off the air, I doubt they would bring him back.

The local affiliates would probably gladly take that half hour, either to expand their local news (everybody isn't home by 6) or to do something else. I'm surprised we haven't moved in the direction of no evening network news, but the networks feeding more national cuts for local stations to use.

You may be confused...he's still on the payroll, but retired.

Not going to happen. We haven't moved there because the networks need the money. Nobody is giving away beachfront property. Or if they are, tell me.

They're feeding more cuts, but they still want the half hour of live inventory.

While I doubt this'll ever happen, it would be interesting on which member of the Big Three would blink first. CBS, last in the rating, could pull their 'flagship' news program. CBS has to be scratching their heads: they are number one in Primetime, Daytime (yes!) and Colbert is doing great.

But the average age of a CBS News viewer has to be pushing 80 now.

They might want to think about putting one of their online CBS News anchors in there. CBS does a decent job with their online newscast. Too bad their OTA broadcast is still stuck in 1965, and they're looking for The Second Coming Of Uncle Walter. Ain't happening. Those days are over.

Numbers for the week of May 22, 2017:
NBC ABC CBS
• Total Viewers: 7,793,000 7,529,000 6,237,000
• A25-54: 1,780,000 1,576,000 1,296,000

CBS's PM newscast has a bigger issue in lagging ABC and NBC, and that issue is greater than the average age issue, which affects all the broadcast networks proportionally.

i got two questions to ask related to the end of the Scott Pelley era at CBS Evening News.

1. when does former NBC Nightly News and current MSNBC anchor Brian Williams contract with NBCUniversal expire and is it this year.

2. if it's expiring in the near future, would CBS take the chance of giving Brian a redemption after the whole "lying Brain" debacle that pretty much ended his run as host of NBC Nightly News and demoted him to hosting MSNBC's breaking News coverage and host of "The 11th Hour with Brain Williams". then again, this is the same network that had a similar situation with Dan Rather in 2005 that pretty much ended his run as host of the Evening News and it's suffered from that ever since.

It does seem like the networks have higher standards than the cable news networks. Brian Williams is on MSNBC after being exposed of lying, Dan Rather is regularly on CNN especially on CNN's media show. CNN's Fareed Zakaria was exposed of Plagiarism and is still there. On all three cable networks opinion host say things that are untrue and no action is taken.

It will be interesting to see where CBS goes with this because it doesn't seem like they have groomed anyone to replace Pelley. Everyone knew Williams was going to replace Tom Brokaw then when Brian messed up Lester Holt was the most logical person to replace him.
