Alternate view: Radio Industry News, Radio Show Prep, Radio Promotions, Radio Station Data, Podcast News

Top 5+ demo rankings analysis from Research Director, Inc./XTrends will be available on Wed. 3/20/2024.

92.5 making a move! Second month in a row where 105.3 is less popular than C89.5. And a major post-football drop for 93.3 KJR!

Major dead period for sports, so not shocking both jock talkers were down. As the pros around here say, you don't look at one book, you look at rolling 3 book (or longer) averages.

Interesting. So the top station in the metro, KUOW, isn't really top? Maybe in the over 55 crowd.....

With KCMS not doing well lately, could we see Christa decide to sell it eventually? I'd say that's at least a year out, but could it be a possibility?

I doubt it, because it's their main brand, and being one of the two local commercial Christian radio operations (KGNW being the other one -- the Catholic stations don't take local adverts, as far as I can tell), they have more or less a lock on Christian targeted advertisers.

But a lot of it would also depend on their overall finances, and Crista has a bunch of different, non-radio operations, along with their radio stations.

It seems to me that selling off a prime FM station in a top market would have to be an absolute last resort. Many would like to get their hands on it I’m sure, but I don’t see Crista parting with it.

Speaking of talk, I wish KIRO (FM) had been able to keep their previous night host. Jonathan Weir (now back on in Boston.) He was funny and refreshingly non-political most of the time.

I know most will probably say it's unique to have a night show at all on a talk station that originates locally but it's so often repeated. When they use the night guy to fill in, the show's often a repeat, and the third hour is usually repeated from the first. So effectively, in a three hour show you get about 60 minutes of actual original content. It just feels like it lacks effort, and strays into the same general talking points as most of the shows on their sister station KTTH.

I'm not opposed to opinions from whatever side, but the talent part of it is to make it interesting or lively. The "new guy" seems to have a pretty narrow scope of what interests him and he's willing to talk about. One of the reasons I always found KIRO to stand out in the talk arena is because their talent seemed to be more intelligent and broad in their interests, coming from whatever political angle they had, if any.

I can understand that argument. I'm not sure how much of Christa's revenue comes from the stations, but could we see a scenario at some point in the future when Christa feels radio isn't worth investing in anymore? That could be in 1, 5, 10, or 20 years, I really have no speculation, as I'd say it's harder to speculate about what Christa is going to do than some other operators given they aren't likely going to change formats and they do have so many other things that could prop up a station that ordinarily would be losing money.

Christa in its various forms has owned 105.3 for 64 years, since its inception as KBIQ. A couple down books won't cause them to sell. They see the stations as part of their outreach and their mission. 50 "down" books in a row isn't going to change that, though it may change their rate card.

While there may be a few "Christian" advertisers, Spirit mainly competes against other AC/ Hot AC stations looking for the 25-54 female cohort, and you will hear many secular advertisers looking to reach those folks. In a market like Seattle, that is mostly what you have available anyway.

Which makes Spirit unique over other CCM outlets (like Positive Life Radio) because of the advertising. I think KLTY Dallas is also a commercial Christian Contemporary station.
I don't see Christa giving up their mothership nor 106.5 in NW WA. However, I can't see KCIS lasting too much longer. KGNW with a similar format has an FM translator, and 630 doesn't. How much does Christa make off KCIS? KGNW repeats many of the same programs, except KCIS clears Unshackled, Lamplighter Theatre, Adventures in Odyssey and the other Christian children's programs on Saturdays, which are not on KGNW. And they have that 'Quiet Time' music later in the evenings.

RE: KCIS: Whatever ratings probably don't matter. If you look at their schedule, aside from late nights (right now it's "Quiet Time Music" with Seattle's own Joe Michaels), and as you said, they have a lot of the same preachers that KGNW does. Like KGNW, there are repeats, so many of the preaching / teaching shows run twice a day. But they've got many of the same shows -- Turning Point, New Beginning, Pathway to Victory, etc. -- so they must be making some money off the station. KCIS is also on KCMS's HD2 or HD3, but who knows if that gets any listeners. Same with their stream. A lot of Crista seems to be funded by donations, and they have schools and camps and the like, so KCIS is probably just another outreach, as until the day that all the preachers pull their shows off of OTA radio, KCIS will probably still be around.

Does anyone remember that sort of Triple A flavored format that I think used to be on one of 105.3's HD channels? Can't recall the name of it or much of what they played, but it was an interesting experiment.

The above make it sound like KGNW is co owned with KCMS. KGNW is owned by Salem. Is KCMS syndicating some Salem programming or the other way around?

The station was called Pure Radio and was a mix of mostly rock oriented AAA/classic hits and some light 30 second preaching sessions. I personally enjoyed it and had it on my presets and I am not a Christian. It was on their HD2 for a couple years. It was disappointing when they removed it as I feel like they went from outreach to more of preaching to the choir. Obviously they made sure there weren't objectionable lyrics or content, but it was well curated. Frankly was a lot more listenable (to me) than KPNW is now.

There is a reason they are called beauty contest numbers. They are fun to talk about, but you can see how meaningless they really are and KUOW is a prime example.

Yes, Pure Music Radio. That was a really cool format. I wish they hadn't killed it, as it was much better radio than what they have on HD now.
