Seattle/Tacoma Radio Ratings - November 2022

I just realized that talking about radio experiences from 32 years ago would make me cringe if I was talking about radio 32 years ago in 1987. That would be 1955. My gawd! Where does time go?
Right? I remember when those in high school seemed really old to me, and 30 seemed like a really long way off. Now my next birthday will be #30, though let's not get too far ahead here as I just had a birthday.

Kelly, I believe I've always said 12-15, not 6. I'll give it a few more months. Ask me that again around the start of baseball season. I'm starting to come around, but not there yet.
You know I will. Do you prefer crow prepared grilled or fried?

I was 27 when it first occurred to me that I was getting older. I still have a pair of shoes that I bought 52 years ago and my oldest granddaughter is 29. Other than a few aches and pains, I don't feel any older than I ever did and there are things that I still don't do because my mother wouldn't like it, even though she's no longer here! You have a long way to go. It should be an interesting ride. Good luck.

KJR FM 93.3 also has WW1 NFL football games. Of course, the AM also has some NFL, too (through Compass Media and I think some other service). But I'm sure the WW1 attracts an audience. A lot of football fans in the region. So I think it stands to reason why 93.3 is doing as well as they are.

What can we throw out there that can get this 99,000-watt stick up into the top 10 again in total cume? Maybe KNWN going to 101.5 and 97.7 flipping to something else for the South Sound? A playlist change? Something closer to the old KMTT?

I like your idea of switching 101.5 to KNWN-FM and 97.7 to another format. A full-powered 101.5 FM might attract more desirable demos, and therefore billings, for KNWN. As for 97.7, I would love to have a mellower rock station in the South Sound, perhaps like Sirius' The Bridge. Given how well KISW and KZOK do, perhaps there is room for another rock station here.

A South Sound 'Sound' perhaps? To compete with KXXO? Even KRXY to some extent? Who says softer AC doesn't get ratings? It's shown in most of the last 5 years on 94.1 mHz. They even reached #3 multiple times.

It seems like you're already listening to SXM 'The Bridge'. Why would a radio station in a smaller community change to such a niche format? So you don't have to pay for a subscription?

Remember; Radio stations broadcast in the interest of reaching the most audience. Doing the same as some subscription service with a local radio station is a recipe for failure.

Meunière , with a little paprika in the burnt butter.

Does either KXXO or KRXY have a large enough audience for anyone to bother to compete with either station? While I personally enjoy listening to KRXY in particular whenever I'm in the area, I also notice that the spot load on the station is pretty light which unfortunately doesn't suggest it is doing that well.

I think KRXY is doing okay (and I stress the use of the term “okay”), but this is certainly not a market that anyone should desire to split any further than it already is (and especially not with a format with anything in common with AC). I could potentially see news radio programming on 101.5 at some point, but it doesn’t seem like a move that needs to be made when Star is not underperforming at a significant level (where there is no justification for just leaving it alone). Not to mention, 97.7 is not an awful signal for FM news, though it isn’t as competitive as KIRO. 97.7 reaches 75% of the Seattle market decently and that’s probably okay for a FM simulcast. There’s not many options for anything else they can do with 97.7.

I can only see two possibilities for 97.7 if they were to split it from 1000.
1. A return of the signal to Classic Hits. Other than 95.7, there's nothing serving that audience in the South Sound really. KYA went sports on that 101.9 last year and even before that wasn't really making that much money, though from what I understand was basically only being sold as a combo with 94.5 which I guess didn't attract many clients.
2. A return of the alt format iHeart did a few years ago. That seemed to have quite the following and I though it was well done, but I have no idea how it did revenue wise.

By the South Sound, are you talking about Tacoma or Olympia? If Olympia, there's already too many stations serving an area with very little prospects for ad revenue. If Tacoma, that's not a separate market anymore. Tacoma is part of the Seatac DMA.

Not surprising. Many stations are facing that same prospect.

Doing a format from a rimshot competing with a full-market signal would be a fools errand.

Is there less cash to go around today than there was 15 years ago, or do the three commercially operated translators really make one station that much less viable?

On average, there's about one third the amount of local ad revenue than even ten years ago. Adding more stations, just cuts a shrinking pie slice that much thinner.

Yes. I actually tried my hand at sales in that market a number of years ago. I can tell you first hand that it was not easy by any stretch of the imagination. I can only assume that it’s become harder and harder to keep in business when there are so few independent businesses that have the extra capital to invest into advertising. On a positive note, at least the stations that already have a strong foothold in the market make it work. However, I don’t see it being a good idea at all for anyone to try to market 97.7 to the south sound specifically. 97.7 is also one of the stronger signals coming out of the south sound, so they (Lotus) may as well try to market it to Seattle the best that they possibly can.
