Seattle-Tacoma Radio Ratings: September 2023

Watch 94.1 retool after the Holidays. More local talent, hotter mix of music. Less softer AC and will look to secure soldily the AC lead relagting Star and Warm to battle for scaps. Thus forcing Lotus to really rexamine their market position with Star and consider a flip to Country. Warm will never flip. ( EDIT: KNPW more like KPNobodyCares-W - Gonna need to get John to up his Facebook posting from the stuio with his old pics of old artist that don't mean anything to a listener.)
Maybe they will move to a more Warm 106.9 based playlist maybe not. Who knows. They might just keep it as it is and Warm might retool a little but still keep it as “Todays Warm 106.9” like they did many times to compete with 94.1. They kept the same personalities on Warm since 2020 with only occasional retooling of the music. 94.1 might just retool with more local talent though while keeping Delilah. If 94.1 retools it might cause Star to go back to Hot AC and Warm to become more current in a K103 kind of way while still keeping the imaging.

To me, there's really not a lot to see in this book. I do wonder how long Hubbard can realistically keep 98.9 going with its current format. I gave them two years starting with the July book I think it was, when they showed their first decline. Given how low the ratings are though, I'm thinking that might even be generous. Seattle doesn't have a 90s and 2K station yet, I'm going to go with that as the next format on 98.9.
They might try a similar direction to Kiss 107.9 and Hot 93.3 if they go 90s/2K as they might add a small amount of current music and some 2010s hits but still try to avoid overlapping with KQMV by avoiding certain rhythmic hits that are current. KQMV will probably play more currents in order to avoid overlapping with it but still keep some gold titles as it is the norm for CHR stations nowadays and probably even avoid Mainstream Pop/Rock titles if the station includes any currents. The branding likely won’t be “Kiss” or “Hot” though as 106.1 used to have the brand and “Hot” already exists on 103.7. It will likely be a different brand than the others that were previously as it could be called “The Vibe” for all we know.

I don’t think that would be a good decision for Hubbard, as you’ve already got Star 101.5 in the hot ac space. We’ve already established that there may not be enough room for 94.1, 101.5, and 106.9 to compete over the same listeners. Adding another station in that fight would be extremely risky. If Star didn’t already exist, maybe. But as you already said, they (Hubbard) would then be competing with themselves. I think Hubbard is content with 92.5 and 106.9, as both stations serve a different purpose and don’t overlap significantly enough to lead to attrition.

Heard at least one KPNW-FM spot referring to their potential audience, which was GenX.

I would think, at least from most of the music I've been hearing played on the station, that the other main demo range they're seeking is older Millennials. Boomers coming up last.

Well basically they are two entire different stations. They probably won’t do a Hot AC on 98.9 since KQMV would have to avoid rock/pop crossovers like they did when Click was around. Warm I think would stay the same since that wouldn’t be a problem for them since they play very little current music anyways.

It may be that what KellyA said about KPNW filling a demo gap, for demographic spread, might have some teeth.

KQMV has the younger leaning demos, KRWM is apparently aimed at 35+ adults who like AC, and maybe they thought they'd aim for the 30-55 alt and classic rock crowd -- the demos that won't listen to pop, hip-hop or AC. When they ran KVRQ (Rock 98.9) they seemed to be aiming it at GenXers.
