Ha! No boat, and I surely would not use the 270 as an anchor. You know there are some out there...but for the life of me I cannot seem to locate complete examples...JBI
If you are still looking for Scully machines - I think I know where there are a few that are complete, not sure if they they are the Model 270, but will check when I can. These machines are massive and were used at a station in St Louis in the 70s. A friend of mine who is a a station owner/engineer/pack rat has them in his possession and is trying to liquidate some of his stuff.
Right , One of the companies associated with Saki offers relapping services...remember back in the AMPEX days several companies specialized in relapping only the "350" series heads? JBI
And as I will say, and say again 1,000 times. Before rewinding or fast forwarding a reel, LOCK DOWN THE HUBS. Don't go from rewind or FF straight to Stop. Hit the opposite direction fast wind and then stop to save the tape from damage.
Yeah that's great advice about hitting the opposite direction first to slow the reels down! I had a Teac X1000R that did this automatically. It was an excellent way to save the brakes and the tape. I do this manually with my Otari deck.
Indeed, professionals call this practice feathering the brakes. Saves wear and tear on reel brakes on tape machines and spilling and stretching tapes. Ampex, Scully and Revox and most Studer machines demand this practice as do Otaris. I am a MX 5050 B II man myself.
