I'm at home this afternoon at 2pm, watching college football. Feeling kinda 'meh' with the games on, I decide to fiddle with my Philips MP3 player and scan for FM stations. I half expected to pick up feeble reception of WBFZ upon hitting 105.3, but I was surprised to hear what sounded like discussion of the newest college football rules. Continuing to listen to odd-sounding live reads and commercials, I figured out that this was the Texas A&M football broadcast. They're readying for the first SEC conference game against Florida, at home in College Station. Okay, I figure--WBFZ is off-the-air again, and I'm picking up a nice DX signal. I go online, and figure...Woah, this has to be KRLD 105.3 "The Fan" in Dallas. What a catch! I exclaim on the DX board. I should note that I never actually heard station identification while listening inside my house.
And I figure, maybe this will be on my car stereo, too. So I hop in my ride, and within a minute of turning the stereo on...I hear a familiar "WBFZ, Selma" sounder. Whaa...? Reception is just as strong (for car stereo reception) as it usually is. I watch the RDS indicator scroll the grammatically incorrect 'Guess Whose Back' slogan 105.3 used too, along with its current website.
I couldn't believe my ears, and I'm barely believing my eyes...WBFZ 105.3 is apparently an afflilate for Texas A&M football. I don't know the exact hows or whys, but if I may speculate: They have to be getting paid somehow, given that they've eschewed local advertising for donation begging. Weird!
