It is a sad day at Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles as their recently resigned CEO Sergio Marchionne, who was forced to step down due to health problems on July 21, has passed away.
During his career at Fiat, the Italian-Canadian lead the company as it merged with Chrysler as part of bailing the American automaker out of bankruptcy after the company went broke during the fallout of the breakup of DaimlerChrysler when Daimer spun Chrysler off in 2007, thus undoing the 1998 merger between the German company known for being the maker of Mercedes Benz and the company know for making cars under it's namesake brand as well as their sister brands Dodge, Jeep and the now defunct Plymouth brand.
During his time at FCA, he overseen the entire company and it's two namesake brands Fiat and Chrysler as well as sister brands Dodge, Ram (itself a spin off of the Dodge Trucks division which the name comes from the fullsize pickup previously known as the Dodge Ram), Jeep, Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Maserati, and up until it's spin off from the company in 2014, Ferrari.
He was credited with saving Chrysler from folding during the Great Recession.
Marchionne joined Fiat as CEO in 2004, which he ran until the merger of Fiat & Chrysler in 2009.
He was forced to step down on July 21 after suffering health problems in which were severe enough to force him to resign. He passed away at University Hospital of Zürich in Zurich, Switzerland after he fell into a coma after suffering a stroke while undergoing surgery on his shoulder to remove invasive shoulder sarcoma (a malignant form of cancer that can develop in the body's soft tissue) tumor.
He was 66 years old.
