Shocking news, WPVI 6ABC takes over 10 PM newscast on WPHL 17

Jefferson Ward said:
Julius: Since you brought up the topic, what are YOUR thoughts on WPVI producing the 10:00 newscast on WPHL? What does you think? Why or why not?

Who is you?

:D :D

Would WPHL 17 ever start up their in house newscast again? Their sister station KSWB-TV in San Diego did few years ago.

Julius: why do you think the news product on Fox 29 sucks? Please explain.

Jay: Eye b Jefferson Ward yo. holla!

e-dawg: I do not see WPHL starting up news on thier own again. It's probably cheaper for Tribune to pay another station to produce the news for them.

DotheJ...actually, they didn't satrt using the "Move Closer To Your World" current theme until '72 after they switched to the WPVI calls in 4/71. It was from WNAC Boston. The WFIL-TV6 ORIGINAL Action News (w/Larry Kane replacing Gunnar Back) theme went like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKDDYkcWUXk

But hey...it's still 40 years, right!

But what I don't get is this: Action News is a REAL ratings getter, NOT fill. Why would Disney let the Philly affiliate go into competition with it's own Prime-Time line up from network offerings?

Wouldn't Disney want more ratings? If you are watching ABC at 10pm or Action News at 10 on WPHL, you're going to be watching one of their products. If Ch. 6 is not in the 10pm news race and people want to watch news, they're going to be watching Fox, CBS3 on the CW or NBC10 on MyPhl. Going to be interesting how the 10pm news ratings will be with Ch. 6 in it for the 1st time. Will Action News kill Fox and CBS3 on the CW?

Bill-W...Ratings are not ratings when you split them and canibalize your owner/parent network! I'm sure they'' eat the other 10 pm News offerings' lunch. But also, the network bases it's rates on delivering eyeballs to national sponsors. Philly is TV Market #4 in the nation, 3 million TV households. www.nielsen.com/content/dam/corpora.../tv/nielsen-2012-local-DMA-TV-penetration.pdf Eating away your Primetime schedule with your #1 local brand product, 7 nights a week? Hmmm, I don't know. It won't make the sales team that sold that 10-11 slot for ABC real happy. They're selling Cost Per Point or Cost Per Thousand, and if they don't hit the goal, they either need to run free spots till they hit the client goal, or rebate them.

Come on Julius, give us a compelling reason why you think that way. If you're gonna lay your opinion on us, at least back it up!!
I don't like the anchors. I don't like their presentation and I don't like everything about their newscasts

Yeah, that was deep. More like surface shallow.

Ultimately it doesn't matter what you think because they're still the "Delaware Valley's news leader" whether you like them or not.

Julius doesn't like Channel 6's news, he doesn't like Channel 29's news, and he doesn't like The 10! Show on Channel 10 (which is being cancelled).

Julius: do you like anything? You are constantly complaining about what's on the radio and what's on local television. Do you like anything at all?

My question is, will channel 6 stream this 10pm newscast on its website like all the other newscasts broadcast on channel 6? or maybe it will stream on channel 17's website? I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

Why would ABC care anymore then NBC had, and CBS does? People aren't gonna stop watching ABC programing at 10, to watch action news. People who wanna see the news at 10:00 however already don't watch ABC programing at 10:00. That means mostly a netprofit of overall programing viewers for ch6 content, which helps their bottomline.

Or to put it another way if Action News at 10:00 viewers drawing pool was to be put up as a pie chart it would go something like this.
50% excising viewers of 10:00 news on ch17
22% Eyewitness news at 10:00 on the cw57
22% Fox 29 10:00 news
2% from people who normally watch ABC programing at 10:00, but always watch Action news
1% From people who normally watch CBS programing at 10:00, but always watch Action news
1% From people who normally watch NBC programing at 10:00, but always watch Action news
2% other

Ontop of that ch17 often provides Phillies baseball as a leadin, which offers Action news the chance to reach people who normally don't watch.

Bottomline ch6's ad rates won't go down 1 cent at 10:00, which means whatever 6 is making with Action News at 10:00 is pure profit on the bottom line.

gonna be Intresting too see if WXTF fox 29 cuts its newscast from an hour to 30 Miniutes

if i remember in the 90s 10 o-clock news was from 10pm-10:30
IMO, they should.

Julius: I know you don't care how TV or radio works (you have clearly stated that many times over the years), and you just want stations to do what you demand. However, your outlandish demands will not be met (except for WCAU cancelling The 10! Show). As I have stated before on here, it would stupid for Fox 29 to cut back the newscast to 30 minutes, just because you don't like their newscasts. With the newscast being an hour long, in terms of revenue for the station, they can sell more commerical spots for that hour of news. Stations with newscasts draw most of their revenue from companies that advertise during newscasts. Also, they can provide more news and information if the show is an hour long or longer. What part of this don't you understand? You post all these opinions but do not elaborate on those opinions backed up with facts to support your arguments. Please stop it. Just stop.

I watched Rob last night at 10. Regular Actions News broadcast. They all said Action News at 10 on PHL17. A PHL17 logo in the beginning before the regular Action News opening. PHL17 bug with time and temp in the corner. If I watched news at 10pm, it was on the CW. Action News for me at 10 now if I watch news at 10pm. Really did wish it was Jim doing the newscast during the week at 10.
