Shocking news, WPVI 6ABC takes over 10 PM newscast on WPHL 17

Irish: a valid point. There's 2 sides to a coin....then there's the edge as well.

Noticed that the first weekday broadcast was done from the 4pm newsdesk. Also, weather was done from the "Big Board".

Julius: I know you don't care how TV or radio works (you have clearly stated that many times over the years), and you just want stations to do what you demand. However, your outlandish demands will not be met (except for WCAU cancelling The 10! Show). As I have stated before on here, it would stupid for Fox 29 to cut back the newscast to 30 minutes, just because you don't like their newscasts. With the newscast being an hour long, in terms of revenue for the station, they can sell more commerical spots for that hour of news. Stations with newscasts draw most of their revenue from companies that advertise during newscasts. Also, they can provide more news and information if the show is an hour long or longer. What part of this don't you understand? You post all these opinions but do not elaborate on those opinions backed up with facts to support your arguments. Please stop it. Just stop.

Jefferson, you and I are on the same page. Julius, read this until you understand it.

Last night's Phillies away game with the Mets where the bats went on the offensive right from the start of the first inning was aired on channel 17 with the game running to about 10:25PM. Some observations and a recap of what was aired postgame...

1. 6ABC News at Ten was pushed back a half hour to 10:30 on the schedule to accomodate the Phillies postgame show (usually broadcast live from Sugar House casino). Not a big deal I guess.

2. Well, I guess it looks like John Clark (along with Mike Missanelli) are still doing the postgame on PHL17 at least through the end of the season. I surmise this is more of the fact I think the postgame show is produced by Xfininty/Comcast and whatever channel broadcasts the game, gets the postgame show. (I think 6ABC favors heavy advertising for the sorta competition of Verizon Fios, but then again...)

3. The postgame show was a full 30 minutes after the game broadcast ended. I suppose the talent liked blowing smoke up the collective Phillies rear ends, because of the seemingly big deal 16 to 1 win last night.

4. About that 6ABC News at Ten...for obvious reasons, that didn't get aired until 11PM. There was a "Previously Recorded" indicator in the top left corner of the picture and of course, the regular 11PM news airing on channel 6 with Jim Gardner was going out live. I don't recall if this ever was the case for NBC10 was doing the news on PHL17...somehow, I seem to recall that if the Phillies ran late, they didn't bother recording a news segment...

That show is actually produced by PHL17 (and possibly the Phillies TV Network as well) so whatever deal they have with 6ABC doesn't affect that.

It's always a half hour long

When NBC10 produced their newscast they did tape delay the show when there was a game. Before PHL started doing a regular post game show, the game would sometimes end between 9:30 and 10 and they'd start the newscast early and finish it at it's regular time so they had an extra segment or two to fill with content.

Same thing happened when NBC 10 had the 10 PM newscast. They need to stop this. PHL-17 is hurting channel 6's ratings at 11 PM, when they do something like this.

If Channel 6 is airing Action News live at 11pm and Channel 17 is airing a taped Action News at the same time, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to click down to Jim Garder live on Channel 6. How would a taped show hurt channel 6's ratings?

Last night, (9/27) tape delayed due to Phillies again noticed that the time/temp bug showed time as if it were live from 10PM, instead of 11PM... that seems like something they should avoid when delaying the broadcast (perhaps just have it stay on the phl17.com setting)

PHL 17 should not be running tape delayed newscasts anymore. Viewers won't mind if the newscast has to be skipped on some nights because of sports.

Just because you don't mind if a newscast is skipped because of sports doesn't mean other viewers won't mind. You are not the spokesperson for everyone who watches the news. Where is your proof that viewers won't mind if the newscast has to be skipped because of sports? Since you like to post links to information, please post links of your proof. If you have an opinion, please back it up with proven facts. Your posts get worse and your demands/opinons get more outlandish day after day, month after month, year after year. Stop it.

I did enjoy flipping between channel 6 and 17 last night seeing John Rollings doing his 2 live shots at the same time on 2 different stations. Is the 10pm newcast webcast on either channel 6's website or channel 17's? I keep saying I'm going to check but, if I'm on the couch, I'm too lazy to get the laptop. I don't think I can check on the iPhone or iPad. They should try to run the news at 10:30 on 17 and put the postgame show on CSN or TCN.

Too bad they don't do the 17 news live at 11pm from the 4pm desk with Jim sitting near them doing the 11pm newcast from the regular news desk. Ch 17 weather from the "Big Board" while Ch 6 weather from the green screen.

Bill: I have not been inside WPVI's new facility, but they probably only have one control room...thus they can not do two newscasts at once. Also, the amount of studio cameras they have is a factor too. That's why they tape the 10:00 newscast for Channel 17 when they know baseball is going to run past 10:00, so they can get ready to do the live 11:00 newscast on Channel 6. This practice is not uncommon in markets where a "Big Three" affiliate produces a 10:00 newscast for a Fox or MyTV affiliate (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Providence, Charleston WV and SC, just to name a few).

It was kind of a joke. I did notice that the Ch 17 news was live from 10:10-10:40. I guess the latest they could do live is 10:30-11? No different than between 4pm news to 5pm news or 5pm news into 6pm.
It appears that commercials are out of channel 17 while newscast is somehow sent from channel 6 to channel 17. There is something noticeable going from one to another. Was it the same with channel 10. I honestly never watch Ch 10 news. I used to watch Eyewitness News on the CW if I was watching at 10 before. I prefer Action News so I watch Ch 17 if I'm watching news at 10.
I moved here in 1978 as a 9 year old. Action News is still the same as when I was a kid (except the magnetic weather board is gone). I hope that is in a museum somewhere. That isn't the original map at The Discovery Museum in Cherry Hill, is it?
