SHOULD KSWD/BONNEVILLE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FORMAT HOLE & BRING BACK KLSX?

It was fun and the hosts, like em or not, were at least interesting to listen too!

Unless I'm mistaken, (and I'm sure DE & others will tell me, if I am) KLSX was actually doing ok?....In fact, much better then KWSD...

TSL numbers had to have been substantial for KLSX??

KLSX was picking up steam when the plug was pulled, weren't they?

Would it work again?

KSWD could negotiate less expensive contracts with Bonaduce, Frosty & gang, Leykis and Carolla....No?....Or just find a whole new lineup of talent?

While indeed, KLSX had figured out how to program to PPM and at the time of it's demise was #1 with men 25-54 (it's target demo) in middays and afternoons, and an NTR powerhouse, it, like KHJ, KMET, KNAC and others is now but a fond memory in LA radio history.

Everyone has moved on. Adam Carolla has his own entertainment company, is a published author, actor and stand-up comedian. FHF have split up and are doing their own things. Leykis has his own new media company and is still riding out his CBS contract. Tim Conway Jr. is enjoying his most success ever on KFI and all of the infomercials are now on KABC.

KLSX had a good run, was a fun station to listen to and work at but it's not coming back. Ever.

If you miss it that much, subscribe to Adam's and Heidi & Frank's podcasts, the Pretty Good Podcast (Conway & Whitman appear on their every now and then along with other KLSX alumni) and The Tasting Room and you can build your own little virtual KLSX on your iPod. As for any radio company today shelling out the money and commitment to put a station like that on the air again, ain't gonna happen.

Not gonna happen for multiple reasons....

* Bonneville's core religious values would not allow for programming such content.

* KLSX had a 10 year history - so talk about picking up steam at the end is irrelevant to the overall estimation of the viability of the format

* Your suggestions of who to place on such a station is completely a retread line-up – not a single fresh thought in there

* KSWD has been “picking up steam” since its full adoption of classic rock. A result which BTW saddens me, as I wanted KSWD to be AAA and have scant interest myself in classic rock. Even at the outset, KSWD was not nearly current intensive enough of a AAA, a factor which IMO doomed their ability to compete in that niche. Look at the terrific songs currently on the AAA charts – good stuff not all of which is heard much in the LA Radio market:

FLORENCE + THE MACHINE Dog Days Are Over
MUMFORD & SONS Little Lion Man
KINGS OF LEON Radioactive
SHAWN MULLINS Light You Up
TIRED PONY Dead American Writers
MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD Hey Hey Hey
CAKE Sick Of You
GUSTER Do You Love Me
RAY LAMONTAGNE & PARIAH DOGS Beg Steal Or Borrow
JACK JOHNSON At Or With Me
ROBERT PLANT Angel Dance
ADELE Rolling In The Deep
FITZ & THE TANTRUMS MoneyGrabber
DECEMBERISTS Down By The Water
RAY LAMONTAGNE & PARIAH DOGS For The Summer
MUMFORD & SONS The Cave
ONE ESKIMO Amazing
NEON TREES Animal

Let's take this from a different angle (and I'm not among those who miss KLSX):

Is there sufficient profit to be made from a 25-54 year old male skewing talk format that isn't sports in Los Angeles?

David Eduardo's probably best equipped to answer that. And if the answer is yes, then we can get into whether KLSX in fact is the model for that type of a station still, or if we'd be talking about creating something fresh.

As someone who misses the format, I don't think 100.3/Bonneville would bring the format back. The only company I would think would do it is...CBS. If JACK continues to struggle ratings wise, why not? Instead of simulcasting KNX, try it again. KLSX brought in a ton of money and the ratings were strong when CBS pulled the plug, someone should do it. I don't agree with an earlier poster who said everyone "moved on". How much money are each of those making in podcasting? They need radio and radio needs them. I mean, Conway is doing really well at KFI, but other than that no one has "moved on".

I dont think Jack would flip the format anytime soon. Why would they? They dont have to spend on Air Talent, and I dont think their entire staff (Board Ops, and Writers) would come close to making what a full Air Staff would make. Even if their ratings are low, they are still making a profit...and ultimately, thats what matters now in radio. I agree with some in here...KLSX is now part of LA radio history.

Just because CBS dropped KLSX, doesn't mean it wasn't viable? They were smart in going after KIIS' enormous numbers and easy money, but they left an easy & working format behind...Someone shoud fill it !

Doesn't have to be 100% male skewed! Can most certainly be tweaked to aim at Women too!

It was a money-maker before the switch!

To me, it was an oasis away from the commercial, bland same-ness of FM music radio!

It's the way to go in light of SIRIUS' & Stern's continued success! His show is only average, at best....There's more entertaining talent out there!

Internet Radio in the car is almost here! That will put huge pressure on Commercial radio!

Commercial radio better re-invent itself quickly....And the KLSX model worked!

I doubt Bonneville an arm of the Mormon church would put on a format that employs fart jokes, putting down of women and sexually explicit content. That's what satellite radio is for. KLSX or a format similar is NEVER coming back!

If JACK continues to struggle ratings wise? 25-54 over the last six months JACK has ranked 3rd, 3rd, 3rd, 2nd, 7th, and 6th and they usually slide a bit in the fall.

CBS had four of the top six stations 25-54 in November.

The Wave was 16th - so if there was a station to flip, that would be it.

I don't where these silly things come from.

You are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO on the money - Just look at the list - I would DIE to hear Ray LaMontagne & The Pariah Dogs on a full signal LA station (not KCSN-sorry) It's nice to have an iPhone and Wunderradio App to get stations like AAA KTHX 100.1 Reno in my car so I can rock out to groups like The Decemberists. I've gone to the point of agreeing with Gleason on this, that LA just cannot have a full-signal station of this caliber (Though Chicago, Denver and Reno can :-[) Jus' My Op. JG
