Maybe. But tunes like "Quittin' Time" were core to the country audience back then. When I was running WTNT in Tallahassee in a very traditional leaning market that was one of our biggest hits at the time.

Everybody has someone who opened the door. In Chapin's case, her music fit with Kathy Mattea and Suzy Bogguss. All three point to Emmylou Harris as an influence. Emmylou points to Loretta. So there's always a country connection.

Certainly, at that time there was some question about songs that did not have a full pedal steel guitar or at least a banjo or fiddle. Some said they were crossovers, some said they were not country. But when you did an AMT, they tested high with the core audience.

In other words, the listeners thought they fit. So we played them.

No problem. Johnny Cash never used any of those instruments in any of his records. They were regional instruments.
