Should Red Sox Radio go "way back!" to Trupiano? (Wolfy's efforts)

(A post on boston-radio-interest by KVahey said rumor has it that Jason Wolfe tried to get
Trupiano back on Sox radio but Lucchino squashed it...it's possible that Geffner may only
be doing games this year then could move on to another job, btw, and O'Brien would back
away from his ESPN duties to be Castig's partner on a more regular basis...)

"At best Geffner is suited to be a minor league announcer."
One person is quoted as saying Geffner rushes and wants to fill every minute of airtime with talk--
something that doesn't work well with baseball which NEEDS the occasional pause!

It will be a glorious day if Geffner is dumped. I love the Red Sox but ever since the new ownership came on board, the media has had a lovefest with them. There is hardly any criticism of them and the radio and TV coverage is all positive PR. Its's because, I am sure, that WRKO, the Globe, and NESN are not independent of the Red Sox. The Globe owns part of the Sox, NESN is owned by the Sox, and WRKO is beholded to them.

Anyone who read last week's fluff piece by Gordon Edes on Tom Werner dressing up as Wally and "attacking" Larry would have barfed. It was such a kiss-a** article.

What Entercom and the Red Sox should do is get rid of both Castiglione and Geffner and have O' Brian and Trup call the games. That would be a good team. I can't stand Joe Castiglione and Geffner should be calling the games for the Lowell Spinners instead.

I seriously doubt Wolfe went to bat for Trupiano (or anyone else). This is ownership's call and it's what they wanted. I'm guessing they would like to 86 Joe as well but they may think that requires a more deft touch than just axing him, do to his service time.

No, do not bring back Jerry Trupiano! Dan O'Brien is way better than Glen Geffner and both are better than Trupiano.

The problem with "Troop?" He was really dull doing pre-game stuff. He needed to clear his throat more frequently. He got way too excited about "way back, waaay back" fly balls that didn't wind up leaving the yard (post-mortem hint to Troop: on a fly ball you should watch the outfelders. Their movements will ltell you whether a ball might go out or is likely to be caught on the warning track).

He couldn't say "WEEI Red Sox radio network." WEEI sounded like "dub-yee-eye." No one belongs on a network that they can't pronounce.

He used to work in St. Louis and Houston and talked about it way too much. No one cares. During slow moments he'd make lame lyric jokes about old songs that no one remembers. At times Joe Castigliano sounded embarrassed about it.

He also said stupid things like "That brings up Trot Nixon...he's looking to get on base." No shit. What batter isn't looking to get on base? Then he'd say it again one pitch later.

Dave (!) O'Brien...and yes he's very good, prob better than Jerry. But I'd prefer Jerry to Goofner if the choice
is between them.

On second thought you may have a point about Trup in that case. that's goofner-esque. Troop did have
some memorable calls like "Jump on his (Ortiz') back , fellas"

Good or generic? I actually like Dave & Jerry together better and better, like you're getting a little bit of both (old time radio & corp. puke) but not too much of either. When Glen does the games it is purely amature hour.

Expect more Dave and less Glen next year. Dave sounds great, is a total pro and plays well off of Joe's more old school approach. I have it on good authority that Geffner was an accomodation to the Sox since O'Brien's schedule is still complicated by ESPN commitments. FYI, for the Wolfe bashers out there, O'Brien was his hire after the team made the call on Troop.

Lets hope that Dave OBrien will be free of ESPN next year to do all Sox games. He is excellent. Joe is Joe. I just hope that Geffner was just there to keep the seat warm until Dave could fill it full time.

It's weird Dave calling a Yankees game on ESPN then back to the Sox the next day. Sorry--one or the other and get rid of Geffner. I'm sure the Sox need another locker room attendant. Or maybe someone to drive Lucchino around.

it's still confusing--WRKO today or WEEI? Who will announce? Consistency is better and I also miss Trupiano. Hell, I'd want Sean McDonough back but he's not a kiss-you-know-what. He's honest and that's probably why got whacked. Any time I hear him on a network broadcast, it reminds of how good he is...
