Well I've got to give kudos for what many stations here in Phoenix did for the New Years Eve into New Years party, especially KZZP and KMVA. I just wonder why can't stations here do every Friday and Saturday night like they did on the night of New Years Eve?
Here's a list of the stations (that I'm aware of) that did some form of mix shows:
KVIB - 95.1 Club 95 Latino Vibe
KMXP - Mix 96.9
KMVA - MOViN 97.5
KKFR - Power 98.3
KNRJ - 92.7 / 99.3 The Beat 101.1
KZON - 101.5 JamZ
KZZP - 104.7 Kiss FM
There was a lot of "house/dance flirtation" going on on KZZP at various times all throughout the night, and it was unbelievable what KMVA did right after the new year broke, in addition to the fact that they actually mixed PAST 12am!!! There was no DJ I.D. for whoever did that 30 minute quick mix on KMVA shortly after 12 and the other mixes that followed, but all I know is that I heard the exact same remix of INOJ's "ring my bell" in a perfectly done quick mix blend that I also heard from a dj who used to be on the 101.5 JamZ for the noon old school labtop lunch mix, which was also a perfectly done (computer generated) quick mix mixshow...
So I'm just hoping that with all the facts I have based on what I've heard, it's safe to assume that KMVA has added Dj Pauly to their team and just MAYBE there will be more mixes, or at least better computer generated mix show blending to replace some of the current train wrecks currently taking place. That after 12 mix show also had quite a bit of variety to it too, playing many songs that aren't on the playlist, but COULD (and probably should) at least be given some play during mix shows (which is another thing Dj Pauly is good at doing everywhere he goes). KMVA is also talking about their New Year's resolution to play even more of the hits that makes people feel good in 2009, but..... I don't know if I should get excited about it. Having a better variety is different than just saying "more music" because you know more music will be released and most likely become hits later on throughout the new year.
KZZP was actually playing some straight up house beats in the mix getting harder than usual from time to time, even though most of it was just the beats with a different acappella under it. Amber's vocals were even used over a Missy Elliott beat behind it, and thanks to all these top 40 hit artists who have really jumped on these use of faster beats, it only helped to encourage more DJ's and stations to consider more in their mix shows.
KMXP did touch a little bit on some retro and old school dance as well like they used to do every Saturday night. I have no idea why they decided to get rid of their Saturday Night block party mix.
Too bad KVVA is no longer what it used to be because I know they would have been going off as they did every year with house and trance, but it's all good because KVIB is not afraid to actually play SOME real dance hits. I didn't listen to much of KVIB because I was focusing mostly on KZZP (and the other stations I could pick up on a walk-man) and a bit on KMVA after midnight. I already know that KVIB doesn't change their style or do anything different for a holiday or off-normal-time mix show. They always provide the same style of mixing anytime they do a show, and what you get is what you get. Some house, mixed up with cumbia, reggaeton, hip hop, latin house, salsa, spanish pop urbano, maybe some latin booty bass hits...etc.
Now, this was all good until sometime around the early morning when everyone stopped and things got boring again... or at least it seemed that it was all over an there was nothing more to come. There was nothing really interesting going on that I know of between the times of 4am and 12pm.
THEN SOMETHING TELLS ME TO TUNE INTO 101.5 JAMZ KZON SHORTLY AFTER 2PM, which was what preset the car was on, and as I was driving and not yet prepared to make a stop to get the things necessary for my I-pod hook up, I just happened to tune in long enough to hear two songs mix, and I was like "huh?" I didn't even bother to touch my I-pod, yet.... They started off with quite a bit of hip hop and pop stuff, also playing a lot more songs from back in the day as usual (which seemed to have some connection with Power's decision to do 12 days of mixmas). Then they hit Lady GaGa in the next set and from there got into some uptempo stuff. I was like "cool! this is great" but thought that was going to be it. Next thing I know, THEY DO IT AGAIN! I start thinking "OK, no big deal. That's probably all." Next Dj comes in during commercials and I plug in my I-pod, only to get home, turn on the stereo inside and BAM! UPTEMPO AGAIN!! - after this happened a few times, Next Dj comes in once again and I'm thinking "well maybe...." and BAM! MORE CURRENT (along with a bit of old school) Booty bass hits and remixes!!! So now I know something must be up because not only did they just start mixing suddenly at an unusual unexpected time DURING A HOLIDAY, but they've been playing a lot more uptempo hits than normal - and mostly current stuff in the higher bpm's, despite the fact they are playing more old school than normal!!! There are certain DJ's there who I know who tend to like to drift towards the faster hits, but the dj who normally doesn't do so was the one who not only played the house version of "hot & cold, but used a mash up that contained the Benni Benassi beat in it! I also heard some rhythmic bass remixes that they had seemed to seriously cut back on over the summer, following the removal of most of their mix shows!! Now... who knows how long this mix is going to last, and not only that, what does this mean? I almost want to get my hopes up that this means SOMETHING. Only problem is the holiday fell mostly towards the middle of the week, so now if any station has decided to use the new year as a marker for change, it's harder to detect the actual end results of whatever is going on until the following Monday. I have no idea what's going on with JamZ, but... they are playing an incredible amount of uptempo remixes, ranging mostly from the 120-135 bpms and sometimes higher. No real dance yet outside of Katy Perry remixes and Britney's song, but still.. It's just too bad that somehow, none of the DJ's seems to have Akon's "beautiful" yet, even though his album is out and KZON just recently added that song as a regular just a few days ago.
UH OH - NOW THEY ARE DOING IT AGAIN!! For the SECOND time as I type this letter alone! I haven't heard them play these remixes or songs for quite a while! What is this???
