Sinclair (KABB Fox San Antonio) announces its buying WOAI and selling KMYS

That will give Sinclair a Fox-NBC duopoly in San Antonio. The release says Sinclair is selling KMYS CW to Deerfield Media. Not familiar with that name.

I imagine i'm nearly 100% correct in surmising that "Deerfield Media" is one of Sinclair's shell companies and KMYS will continue to be operated by them.

So, San Antonio is basically going to lose a news outlet. You can bet that Sinclair will combine the Fox 29 and News 4 WOAI news teams into a single newsteam. Wow, what a huge loss for the Alamo City.

I agree. This is a bad move. It will give San Antonio the same situation in Columbus, OH. Sinclair owns both Fox 28 WTTE and ABC 6 WSYX. Both have the same news department. Bad idea.

Don't know about a "shell company" but word on the street is that there will be a shared services agreement in place, so Sinclair will still operate KMYS, along with directly owned WOAI and KABB.

You are correct. The two operations will be combined with the same certainty that the sun will rise in the east tomorrow morning. I'm sure that everyone in both the KABB and WOAI news departments is updating their resumes and demo reels. A lot of the staff in other departments will also get the axe at both stations.

They SHOULD go back to the News 4 San Antonio branding and possibly even the KMOL call letters, IMHO, esp. since there's no connection -- and hasn't been in several years -- to WOAI-AM ... but I bet they won't.

Is there always a possibility that Sinclair will have the power to change the WOAI call letters to new ones beginning with a K?

Sinclair will be able to change the calls of WOAI-TV if it so chooses, but it will not be forced to do so.

And to clarify the subject of of this thread... Sinclair is selling KMYS... BUT will continue to operate it. So Sinclair will run three TV stations in the San Antonio market:
WOAI NBC
KABB FOX
KMYS CW

I don't have a huge problem with duopolies. (So long as there are emphysema stations in the market) I do have a priblem with triopolies like this where they run 3 stations but don't technically own all 3.

Good call. I used to live there (egad!) and am quite familiar with the Sinclair operation up there from a viewer's standpoint.

The only saving grace will be the News 4 team delivering the news @ 9 on Fox29. Bad for the current Fox29 news team, though. :(

This deal will likely impact advertisers and cable/satellite companies more than it will viewers in terms of KMYS. I doubt the SSA between Sinclair and Deerfield will include news because a newscast on KMYS would compete with KABB, and a typical SSA only includes news and occasional overflow, which requires compensation to the station taking the overflow, in terms of programming.

Most likely, Sinclair's sales reps will be able to sell KMYT in combination with WOAI and KABB and will receive the commission on KMYT sales with Sinclair receiving a percentage of the sales, too. Also, they're likely to negotiate retransmission consent together.

Ironically, San Antonio could end up with more newscast times as a result. I would definitely see the possibility of doing a 5:30pm local newscast of Fox 29 and possibility a noon newscast on one of the stations. Also, a weekend morning newscast might be a possibility. Of course, this is Sinclair -- not known for their extravagant spending! :D

Who says it won't be the KABB team delivering the 10 p.m. news on WOAI?

Going on what I know of Sinclair in Columbus, it will be News4 team on Fox29.

Now......it would be just my luck if the Fox29 newsteam is who winds up on News4. We'll see........

IIRC, ABC6 (WSYX) runs a 90-minute local news block between 5:00-6:30.

ABC6 has a noon newscast.

Memory slips me at the moment, but I believe one of them has a weekend morning newscast (Fox28/WTTE?)
